A24 fans were more than a little disappointed when The Green Knight's release was delayed, but the stunning-looking take on the Arthurian legend will be with us in July, and we now have a series of character posters featuring the main players.
Directed by David Lowery (Pete's Dragon, Ain't Then Bodies Saints), the film is based on the tale of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, and stars Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire, Lion) as the gallant Gawain as he embarks on a perilous quest to face the invincible knight (Ralph Ineson) of the title in order to prove himself worthy of a seat at Arthur's (Sean Harris) Round Table.
The banners feature Gawain, the Green Knight, Sean Harris and Kate Dickie as the "King and Queen" (presumably Arthur and Guinevere), Alicia Vikander's character (believed to be Morgan le Fay), and a fox (who better not get killed).
If you're wondering what the "one year hence" tagline is all about, that's the amount of time Gawain has before the Green Knight comes looking to take his turn with an axe (Google the legend if you want a more detailed explanation, but you might end up spoiling the plot!)
"An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.”
