In a recent interview with Dealine regarding the upcoming The Legend of Conan, a direct sequel to 1982's Conan the Barbarian, Frederick Malmberg, the sole owner of the rights to the Creations of Robert E. Howard (Including Conan), said the following, "We look at how Marvel played out with its rich based of characters, and this too is a universe that lends itself to exploitation in TV and film...". During this same interview, Malmberg also offered some words on the upcoming film, which will star Arnold Schwarzenegger in the role he made famous in 1982, "It’s 30 years after the original film, and he’s facing his mortality and how a legend deals with the fact he’s older, and how does he want to go out." So, what do you think of this news, loyal fans? Would you like to see Kull the Conquerer team up with a geriatric King Conan? Would you lust for a Solomon Kane Reboot? They already tried that with Red Sonja and even tried a reboot a few years ago. Both sucked. Leave it alone.

UGH. More movie studios jumping on the shared universe bandwagon. Comic book shared universes work well because they are a combination of many genres coming together, not just many characters in one genre sharing the same universe, which is what Transformers and this seem to want to do.

I'd love to see movies actually close to Howard's stories.

I'm still sad the animated movie based on "Red Nails" from, idk, ten years or so ago was never finished. It looked pretty good visually imo, and it had a nice voice cast led by Ron Perlman as Conan.

I'm not a fan of the original or remake films but did want to add this, the film studio has to be aware that the rights to the majority of Richard E Howard's characters are public domain in the UK, from Conan to his later works are almost all in the public domain. At the time of his death the length of time for the copyright of his works was 70 years, he died in 1936 so they all fell into public domain in 2006.

I'm not sure about over in the States or in most other countries but I've checked this up on a few websites and they all say the same that while the US copyrights still belong to the family or at least the company who now owns them, for the most part they are public domain across nearly the rest of the world.

So if another film company wanted to make their own film or TV series there is nothing that they could do, however the trademarks are under dispute. The owners are saying that any deviated works would damage the character and the legacy that they hold public domain campaigners are saying that you can retroactively trademark characters and stories that have been in the public domain. (Although I think Disney will have something to say about that, because they're on a mission to try to reclaim rights to stories that've been in public domain for hundreds of years.)

I love krull and red Sonya. Idk what other characters they have the rights to. If they make the script good then there's no reason this can't be successful. Word of mouth is the best publicity.

@IronConstantine68

I'm not that big a fan of making any new movie series based on Howard's stories connected to the old Arnold movies, so I'm all for recasting Conan. But I'd like to start a lot younger, and Perlman is 60+ himself if I'm not mistaken. So no to him for Conan at least. Also I believe he was in the Momoa movie in some role already?!

I'm really not completely sure what would be the best way to go with the Howard properties. Conan, Kull and Solomon Kane definitely have the potential for good movie (or appropriately big TV show) adaptations, but by now I just don't believe anyone is going to do them justice in the near future.

I mean, they did make a Solomon Kane movie, and it was... well, I'm not quite certain what it was...

Everyones jumping on the MCU bandwagon and creating their own universes. But I've always enjoyed Conan, I'll watch the sequels.
