Woody Harrelson is set to play the main villain in Matt Reeves' highly anticipated War Of The Planet Of The Apes. The incredibly talented True Detective and No Country For Old Men actor will play a character called 'the Colonel', per THR. He is the second human character to be cast in the movie so far, joining Gabriel Chavarria, who has an untitled supporting role.

Andy Serkis is naturally set to return via motion capture as the movie's ape protagonist, 'Caesar', while the script will be written by Reeves' Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes colleague, Mark Bomback. The rebooted Planet Of The Apes franchise has been one of the most consistently brilliant series of the last half-decade, achieving widespread commercial and critical success. With Harrelson on board, that trend looks set to continue with this next installment.

War Of The Planet Of The Apes hits theatres July 14, 2017.

I'm still 90% sure that the titles for the first 2 movies should've been reversed. "Dawn" should've been the first movie, and Matt Reeves' sequel would've made more sense as "Rise".

[frick] yeah! Woody Harrelson is awesome in anything! I can't wait to see how they wrap up this trilogy, Dawn of the Planet of Apes was absolutely amazing. Definitely one of my all time favorites.

Can they top themselves again with this? I sure as hell think so!

@ISeeStupidPeople

He was amazing in Out of The Furnace, there's also Natural Born Killers way back in the 90's. Woody is really versatile,

the transition he made from Cheers to Natural Born Killers was amazing

Gary Oldman was a villain in DOTPOTA? He didn't seem to me.

@Jollem

I too believe Rise was better. Both very solid movies though.

The girlfriend and I are binge-watching Cheers and have finally made it to season 11. I had seen a lot of it before, but she never had and loves it. She's not big into movies, so she's actually getting to experience Woody Harrelson the way people did originally, before he took on some of his darker roles. I personally think that's better, since it's easier to accept him as the aloof and honest-to-goodness farmboy from Indiana.

@GrilledPopcorn - "Wait, so the 3rd movie's going to be a comedy?"

So you haven't seen any of Woody's great serious performances like True Detective or No Country For Old Men??

@Gusto - "LMFAO!
Oh, my little Roy toy!"

Kingpin is one of the most underrated comedies.

Big Ern McCracken is arguably the greatest comedy villain of all-time.
