Eva Mendes, who portrayed the childhood sweetheart of Nicolas Cage's Johnny Blaze "Roxanne", will not be returning for the Ghost Rider sequel. The actress confirmed to SuperHeroHype at yesterday's junket for her upcoming film, "The Other Guys".

When asked on her return, "No, unfortunately" was all Mendez had to say.

Minus Eva Mendez, Nichlas Cage will be reprising his lead role as the stunt motorcyclist, Jonny Blaze. And tentatively titled Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, with a story written by David Goyer. And Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Michael De Luca and Steven Paul are producing, while Goyer and Mark Steven Johnson are exec producing.

The "Crank" duo directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor will helm the sequel, and the studio hopes to get principal photography going by late fall.


DCMF - I for one think this is great news. Eva mendes is a great actress, but she did nothing for me in the 2007 Ghost Rider flop. Personally I think this type of film could do better without a potential love interest. What do you think?

this sequel should actually be one of those 10-minute live action shorts marvel wants to make, and not a feature film.

I am kind of looking forward to what Neveldine and Taylor will do though...I recently watched Gamer and it was actually a very well directed film (especially on what was a fairly low budget) despite a not so brilliant script!

The only good thing that came out of this movie was Ghost Rider's design was pretty much straight from the comic, the rest of the movie was pure shit.

She was completely wrong for this character. Roxanne was supposed to be so pure and innocent that here presence helped protect Ghost Rider from the devil. Mendez? No.

This movie failed in dozens of ways. Hopefully the Crank guys will at least produce some good action scenes.

She was really miscasted in that role since Roxanne Simpson's not supposed to be hispanic. Plus, Eva's acting was terrible.

@Josh: Really? You liked Gamer? I actually turned it off before it was half-way through (something I almost never do - I even watched Twilight all the way through, hard as it was!). Some of the ideas were good, but the acting was terrible, the script just cringeworthy, the sound jarring as hell and the direction all over the place. Unwatchable imo.

Re: Ghost Rider news - hopes aren't high, considering this movie is ONLY being made at all so that Sony can retain the rights... but knowing Mendez won't be back just took it from -5 on the hopeometer to -4. Would have been lower, but surely even Hollywood learns from its mistakes? Maybe not... we'll see.

Didn't care for her in Ghost Rider, but even at the notion that shes ugly...c'mon.....C'MON!!! Really??? She ferkin gorgeous!! But that's just my opinion :P

I'd rather my Ghost rider all dark and moody anyways, She's really hot but really out of place in this type of movie.....and if you watch crank 1&2 and don't take it serious but take it the way it was filmed to poke fun at itself they are actually a really good time, as for Mendes she was a throw away character that had nothing to work with anyways, any piece of eye candy would have done about the same job.

But, I've seen her on interviews and she seems completely stuck up and full of herself.

who gives a shit!!!! her gorgeous ass didn't save the first one, it sure as hell won't make the second one watchable. you could have a whole platoon of sexy broads in ghost rider 2 and it will still be a big steaming hunk of crap. i'm boycotting this movie!!!!

Not overly impressed by her acting skills, but Mendes is hot...hot...hot! I rarely say that here. How one can find her fugly is somewhat disturbing. I did like her in Hitch.
