Earlier this summer, it was announced that
a new G.I. Joe film was in development, with the focus on the fan favorite
Snake Eyes. While that movie is
slated to release in October 2020, it now appears that Paramount and Hasbro are working on a second spinoff movie based on the popular toy line.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script for the new
G.I. Joe movie is an "ensemble piece," with one of the characters rumored to be Chuckles, an undercover specialist who excels in criminal investigations and intelligence. Chuckles first appeared as a
G.I. Joe action figure in 1987 and in the Marvel Comics series the same year in issue #60. He did not appear in the previous two
G.I. Joe movies.
To date, there have been two
G.I. Joe movies released:
The Rise of Cobra (2009) and
Retaliation (2013). Neither impressed critics or fans, but they have been financially successful for the studio with a combined haul of $675 million worldwide.
Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec — who wrote the recent
Teenage Mutant Ninja Trutles movies as well as
Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol — are reportedly penning the script for the new movie. The duo are also working on a
Rainbow Six movie based on the popular Tom Clancy anti-terrorism thriller books.
