BOX OFFICE: G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Continues To Dominate; Currently At $132M Globally

Despite mixed (at best) reviews, Jon M. Chu's G.I. Joe sequel shows no signs of slowing down at the box office. The movie is not only dominating domestically ($41.2M over the three-day Easter weekend) but has had the best international opening of 2013 so far.

We weren't big fans of G.I. Joe: Retaliation here (although we have a few more reviews to come; you can read mine here) but audiences have been flocking to it. Paramount reckon the sequel to G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra opened with a global gross of $132 million, which is +35% ahead of the worldwide opening of its predecessor. The movie currently holds the best international opening of 2013, surpassing Oz The Great And Powerful by 15% despite only opening in 75% of the world and has left other new openers The Croods, Tyler Perry's Temptations and The Host in the dust. Have you seen it yet? If not, do you intend to or have the reviews put you off? Sound off in the usual place.

Wow damn this ones RT rating is even worse than the first one. Some movies are just review proof. What was the budget for this movie?

It was less cheesy than the last movie, but it was boring. Cobra Commander was barely in it.

They were mixed. I've read some positive ones..although nobody seems to have LOVED it. 30% on RT is crap, but it's not abysmal! The poor The Host is at 12%!

I grew up watching and enjoying GI Joe as child. I enjoyed this GI Joe movie much better than Rise of Cobra. I think it was due to the director, John Chu. He is a fan of GI Joe and relied on more practical and used good CGI this time. It was 7.5/10. It wasn't perfect but a very enjoyable action movie akin to A-TEAM or Die Hard. And finally thank God to the change of Cobra Commander's helmet and uniform.

Poor characters, bland script, average acting (that's actually pretty good for its standard), and nonsensical plot embroidered with explosive action scenes...all the formula/curses of any movie of its kind, really, but I actually enjoyed G. I. Joe: Retaliation pretty damn much. Yes, even with Bruce Willis portraying a caricature of himself, and RZA.

i liked it. didnt love it, but liked it. I thought it was much better than the first. I do wish they wouldve went with the concept art of cobra instead of the helmet version.

This will make money, that's pretty obvious, but I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. I mean, I liked the movie, but I wouldn't like to see this mindless fun flick expanding into another mindless cash-grab franchise...which it most likely is going to be, sadly! Like Transformers, maybe it's best for this franchise to take a break for a little while, and return when there's a more capable hand to handle it in a serious attempt, but...ah, look, those people are loving 'em as what they are now.

RZA should stop with this acting thing and lock himself away in a studio until he drops another album

Tony93: Exactly; that's what they're aiming for. A movie where a total destruction of a whole city/country can be resolved by a simple news report telling that it's already "slowly rebuilding"...and the audiences aren't supposed to think about it! But, really, that's the point.

THIS GI JOE WAS GOOD..BUT NOW YOU NEED TO BRING BACK SCARLET, NOT RIPCORD..GET SOME NEW CHARACTERS THAT ARE THE ONES YOU JUST KNOW AND GET SOME KNOWN GUYS AN GIRLS TO PLAY THEM...SERIOUSLY THIS IS THE ONE THAT WILL USHER IN THE BETTER STUFF THAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
JredTheRed
JredTheRed - 3/31/2013, 11:15 AM
@Hellsing.....agreed, with ghostface, method, ispectah, u-god, and gza.

another thing about gi joe and transformers is that they really arent targeting our generation. They know our gen will see it, for the reason that we grew up with em only. But the younger gens love em, hell my nephew is a huge bumblebee and optimus fan now. It actually kinda makes me happy that my lil girl and my nephew have alot of the same intrests i had as a child. Admit it, if you knew nothing about GI Joe, you would have liked the movie more.

Jolt17 - 3/31/2013, 11:24 AM
With (Spoiler!) pretty much all of the Joe's dead, I really have no idea how they're going to make more of these, though. Unless they force some aspects of the plot, that is (which they most likely are going to do), but that's not something I'm going to accept. Since a threequel is apparently inevitable, though, I can only hope that it will end as a trilogy...with more Arashikage and Lee/Park - and less RZA - perhaps, then maybe I'll be fine with that!

If it's ok to call someone an "elitist" for not liking this movie, it's ok to call someone who did like it an imbecile:)

I find it pathetic that films like these get sequels while something like Dredd can't where does the injustice stop?
Spike22

The movie had some problems, lack of character respect being its biggest issue(people dying, not explaing what happend to others, people acting out of character). But, BUT over all it was a decent action flick. I say go see it at the matinee price, you'll get a kick out of it.

I take reviews with a grain of salt - everyone goes looking for something different, so I went to judge for myself. I had great fun with this movie - it's not Oscar material, but it suits the purpose of summer blockbuster fun. I also think Chu does a better at character development than Bay, though it doesn't take much. I'm not happy with Duke's situation, but it was ambiguous enough to be redeemed. This movie worked to wipe the slate clean without having to reboot, I think the next film will have more of a chance to deal with the material without having to make up for what came before. Next, I hope we get Dr. Mindbender, the Twins, Destro, Baroness and maybe even Major Bludd. Perhaps Joe 3 can lay the groundwork for a Serpentor series of films - the birth, rise and fall. It'll help focus the franchise.

maaannn...seriously, they shoulda hired The Rock to play KILLER CROC in the batman reboot, as a matter of fact, nolan shoulda picked him as Bane, in The Dark Knight Rises. the guy's got action hero charisma up there on the screen, man. he's the real deal. i hope he'd get a franchise of his own before he gets too old for it.
