Channing Tatum Is Grilled About Rumored Death in G.I. JOE: RETALIATION

The actor who will once again play Duke in a live-action G.I. Joe movie tells MTV that he believes Jon Chu's new version will be much better than Stephen Sommers'. Shocking!

First off I've got some great news for all you G.I. Joe fans. Director Jon M. Chu just tweeted that the Super Bowl ad for the film will be shown early on Entertainment Tonight this very evening. Make sure you tune in!

As for Channing Tatum, he is one of the few cast members of the last effort that will be back for the sequel. But, in the trailer his character Captain Duke Hauser appears to be killed off in a Cobra sneak attack. The Rock who plays Roadblock says that he and only two other members are all that is left of the team. I'm sure we won't know Duke's outcome til the movie is released, but it's fun watching Channing trying to dodge the question as best he can.

The funny thing is that he says in the MTV interview that he hasn't seen much of Chu's version, yet he already thinks it will be better than the last one. Nothing better than watching an actor throw his last outing under the bus.

"I don't know. I think they're going to have to check it out," he said. "I think that the movie is going to be better than the first one. I think that Jon Chu has a younger, hipper sensibility. ['Rise of Cobra' director] Stephen Sommers is great, I really enjoyed working with him, but I think this movie is going to be a little hipper. A little bit more edgy."

Should we prep for seeing a lot of Duke screen time?

"I don't know," Tatum said with a smile, beginning to see where I was going with my line of questioning. "I'm not sure. I haven't seen the final cut."

DO YOU THINK DUKE DIES?

G.I. Joe Retaliation stars Channing Tatum, D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Ray Park, Adrianne Palicki, Jonathan Pryce, RZA, Ray Stevenson, and will be released on June 29, 2012.

They can't kill Duke! even if it is played by one-note tatum... maybe he's on the verge of dying so they must use the nanobots to help him but as a side effect they change his physical appearance as it happened with Zartan in the first one.

I think he's kidnapped, and shows up at the end. Also in the trailer Flint says there's no one they can turn to and Roadblock says "There is one man" could that be the Sgt Slaughter cameo that was rumored on here?

Since this upcoming flick seems like a fun Friday night movie, yes, Duke dies. His survival endangers the success of this film.

Nah they need to keep at least two of the original team from the first movie. I bet he's been kidnapped.

I don't understand why everyone thinks he dies? Isn't he the one in the trailer that says " They're all dead".

I talked to someone who worked on the movie. He does die right at the beginning.

I like Roadblock but it looks as if he s running the show. If Duke dies wasn't Flint next in charge?? He probably dies... Or like the movie he is in a coma til the end.

from the trailer, its safe to assume that the characters from the first movie (minus Duke obviously) were not present in the ambush scene. So the rest of the GI Joes that weren't at the ambush scene were probably imprisoned by Cobra while Roadblock, Lady Jane, and Flint survived and are the only active GI Joe members along with Snake Eyes being alone

Whether Duke dies or not, Tatum didn't exactly do the character any justice in the first film. I don't really think he's going to bring anything to the 2nd film. Dying is a good way to take him out of continuity without having anyone think, "Wait, where's Duke?" I still can't stand Hasbro making him a Capt--Duke's a tough-as-nails enlisted leader!

As for the rest of the Joes dying, in the cartoon or comic continuities, GI Joe is a force made up of A LOT of Greenshirts. Think of them as GI Joe's version of Cobra troopers. Most of them have no cool codenames, but they all work for GI Joe. If the Joes are ambushed at their base (The PIT), then it's very likely that all the Greenshirts provided the death fodder.

But being a now international organization, most of the Joes are probably deployed elsewhere, so continuity can bring them back if there's ever a sequel. The major group of Joes (mostly Greenshirts)is probably dead.

Going back to leadership, if we look at rank alone (assuming everyone kept the correct ranks from the comics or cartoons), then it goes like this from top to bottom: Gen Joe Colton, Gen Hawk, Chief Warrant Officer Flint, Sergeant Major Duke, Master Sergeant Snake Eyes (but he's never in command).

Here's hoping that GIJ2 lives up to all the hype.

They wont kill off Duke. I bet you the movie will have two story lines, the one of the GI JOES trying to stop Cobra FOR killing off the joes, and another one of a small group of survivors laying low and taking cobra from another angle...

I hope Duke doesnt die regardless of who is portraying the character. if he dies and put the damn worthless Rock in charge then this was just an excuse to put a black man in a leading role that was always lead by a man. im no racist but comeon its like having a black batman or a black spiderman...stick with tradition. thats why our country is going to crap now...because everybody wants to break tradition to please everybody.

I have a great idea, guys. Cobra now knows who Duke is personally and to avoid a threat to his family that Baroness knows about GI Joe stages his death. After he "dies" we see a Face/Off type moment where Channing Tatum's face is replaced with another face, much like Zartan.

How is that for an exit strategy for Channing Tatum? And then you can bring in someone that should be Duke, like Chris Hemsworth or Micheal C Hall or whoever you would prefer.
