G.I. Joe Tops Box Office with $56.2M
Source:Coming Soon.net August 10, 2009

ComingSoon.net has posted the weekend box office estimates, which show that G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra opened to over $100 million worldwide in three days:

The month of August kicked off with the long-awaited live action movie based on the popular Hasbro toys, comic books and cartoons as Stephen Sommers' G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (Paramount), starring Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Dennis Quaid and Marlon Wayans, took the top spot with an impressive $56.2 million (estimated) in 4,007 theaters, averaging roughly $14,000 per location. It takes its place as the fourth-biggest August opening of all time, and when one adds in the roughly $44 million grossed overseas this weekend, it makes "G.I. Joe" one of the top August openings of all time.

this amount is actually pathetic. the rush hours made more. it will crash hard next week too due to bad word of mouth, district 9, and some kids start going back to school. i predict it will barely cross the $100 million dollar mark. for a movie that cost $175 million that equals one thing.......FAIL!!!!!

GI JOE was a DARK HORSE OF THE SUMMER if some of you like it or not!!! ; )

Damn, i got GHOSTWORLD cool movie!

WATCHMEN = MASTERPIECE!

Leee you know that wouldn't even come close! Plus, you are not allowed to make fun of that anymore after thae review you gave GI Joke!

And you can't call it a dark horse anymore either! A dark horse is something that comes from nowhere, with a modest budget that nobody expects to do well..like if District9 is great, that could be considered a dark horse. Joe was a multi million dollar summer block buster that should have been great but wasn't...DEAD HORSE!

I also don't get the whole "Well you were never a fan of the cartoon". THAT MOVIE SHIT ALL OVER THE CARTOON! If i was a fan i would be MORE pissed off! Just because they have Hawk say "Knowing is half the battle" does not mean they are respecting the source! I have only ever seen about 1 and a half cartoons and maybe a comic and i know..Ripcord was white, Baroness and CC were not related, Heavy Duty was Roadblock, Breaker was not French, Scarlett and Ripcord never got it on..she was with Snake Eyes. Baroness and Duke never so much as flirted. Should i go on? [frick] right off with that"never watched the cartoon" argument, you fans of that should hate the movie more than i did!

why did they cast any of these people. cause there stupid. and i never understood lee77 darkhorse comment either. this movie was expected to have a big opening weekend so cant be a darkhorse. also, this isnt really a big opening weekend considering all the money and hype. watchmen opened the same, was R rated, and had a smaller fan base. this opening actually sucks.

Just saw the thing. Who did Brendo Fraser play, Flint maybe? I was so deaf, I could hardly hear by that point.

Fraser was Gung Ho. Thats why they zoomed in on his tattoo so we would know. I did hear someone in the background call him SGT Stone though, but I could've misheard that.

no, frasier was sgt stone. look it up on imdb. theres also a toy of his character called sgt stone. dont know who that it is. think it was made up. but he was not gung ho or sgt slaughter.

raking in the cash...it only made half of what transformers 2 made on it's weekend. I think it's the dead horse for sure.

I haven't seen it yet, but just looking at the stats I think it will do OK financially. $56.2 Million opening weekend is by far from being great its still not bad and it is #1 at boxoffice right now. Imdb poll has popularity increasing by 900%.

As far as ROTF, that "flop" has made 819 million wordwide. Even higher than the Harry Potter movies and is about to pass Spiderman up to become 8th highest grossing film ever.

with ticket price inflation, not in actual tiket sales. and harry potter will be it in the end to the overseas ticket sales. but box office doesnt mean shit. sucky movies make lots of money all the time
