SNAKE EYES Star Henry Golding On The Film's Samurai Influence

Henry Golding has revealed that he saw a completed test screening of Snake Eyes way back in August, before the coronavirus pandemic led to the G.I. Joe prequel being delayed until October 2021.

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his upcoming film Monsoon, actor Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, Last Christmas) shared his excitement for the upcoming G.I. Joe prequel, Snake Eyes.

"I think the heart of the story really is who Snake is and his journey as a person, really. Understanding his motivations," said Golding in relation to the film's attempt to craft an origin story for one of the original Hasbro commandos from the toymaker's 1982 G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toyline.

Golding added, "I can't give away too much, but it really focuses on the one person instead of having 20 people on screen and understanding background. We start from the beginning. And, hopefully, this launches an amazing franchise."

Golding also had high praise for director Robert Schwentke, who strove to bring some authenticity to the film.

"With some of the fight scenes there are some chimbara sequences [Japanese sword-fighting]. A lot of attention to cultural detail was put into this movie. There are not a lot of movies that are allowed to film in Japan and we went to some amazing, amazing places. The authenticity is there."

Like most films scheduled for release this year, Snake Eyes was moved from its original March 2020 release to October 2020 before Paramount execs threw in the towel on 2020 and pushed the film further back to October 22, 2021. As a result of the many delays, there's been no footage released to build excitement. Golding shared back in April that a trailer was originally slated for release at Cinemacon before it was cancelled.

Paramount apparently shares Golding's excitement for the project, as work on a sequel script has already begun. However, the chances of a follow-up will naturally depend on the film's box office gross.
