G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Producer Reveals Multiple Sequel Scripts In Various Stages Of Development

With Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, Paramount is hoping to relaunch its G.I. Joe franchise, and it sounds like they already have a number of sequel and spinoff scripts in various stages of development.

It's been eight years since G.I. Joe: Retaliation managed to surprise at the box office, and while a sequel has been rumored for several years now, the studio ultimately opted to go the spinoff route with Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, a soft reboot that will tell the origin story behind the franchise's most iconic commando (Henry Golding).

However, while they're hopeful the upcoming spinoff will revive the property, it sounds like they're also actively developing a follow-up to the 2013 actioner that starred Dwayne Johnson and Adrianne Palicki.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly as part of their massive Snake Eyes first look feature, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura revealed, "There have been some scripts that are in development currently. The truth of the matter is it could have gone first if we'd gotten a good script, but we struggled. While we struggled, in came a really good Snake Eyes script."

Before deciding to move forward with Snake Eyes, the studio also considered a potential spinoff centered on The Baroness, but it doesn't sound like it gained much traction. There's also the possibility that some supporting characters could be heading to the small screen, as it was recently reported that a Lady Jaye series is in the works over at Amazon Prime Video.

As for a timeline, Bonaventura stresses, "We want to get it right. How fast? There's always a question, but no, there's absolutely a commitment from Paramount to get another Joe up and running."

Absolutely NO ONE from the first two jokes of a movie should be involved with GI Joe going forward. Well, maybe catering if the food was good. Redbox still owes me a couple bucks for those beyond horrible movies.

Both GI Joe and Transformers need hard reboots

I actually kinda enjoyed the Rise of Cobra more than Retaliation. I’ve got a soft spot for Stephen Sommers’ movies. Don’t get me wrong, it is not a good movie, but I liked it more than the sequel.

@WakandaTech - I just don't see why they made a service of their own. With those franchises, they head a really strong negotiation position. Bet Netflix and Prime both want massive franchises like that exclusively. Same goes for Universal's franchises

So they're going with the WB/DC and Paramount/Trek plan, " We've made poop, lots of poop! but we're going to spin of the poop and make more brand spanking new poop " they need to reboot GI Joe, have a plan, reboot Transformers while they're at it and rehire the guy behind Bumblebee to launch it, he seems to get it.

A Baroness spin-off? Guess that isn't needed anymore since she's going to appear in Snake Eyes.

That said, I'm kinda hoping they drop their old franchises already and get that Hasbro shared universe underway already.

Yeah GI Joe needs a reboot, so hopefully this is solid. Paramount needs to get their shit together on Star Trek, too

His idea of a “really good script” is different from the typical, I think. I like the character Snake Eyes though so we’ll see
