Mark Strong Discusses the Duality of Sinestro in Green Lantern

Mark Strong describes Sinestro as a "military guy" that "isn’t immediately bad" and says Green Lantern 2 will deal with his fall from grace!

In the Green Lantern comic books on which Warner's latest live-action superhero movie is based, Sinestro is one of the biggest, baddest villains in the DC Universe. A former Green Lantern himself, Sinestro will eventually harness the power of fear and become the founder of The Sinestro Corps.

Actor Mark Strong, who portrays Sinestro in the movie, said that much of what is known of the character from the comics is translated on screen, as well.

"[Sinestro is] a military guy but [he] isn’t immediately bad. [He's] the kind of person [that] lends himself to becoming bad over the course of the comics being written, but initially he’s quite a heroic figure."

Strong said that he will get to mix it up with title actor Ryan Reynolds' character, Hal Jordan, but said that much of it will be CGI.

"...when we have a scrap together, Sinestro tests Hal initially. And a lot of that, because he's an accomplished Green Lantern, is done through the power of his thought. But there's some physical stuff, too."

Strong also confirmed the recent news that a sequel to Green Lantern might already be in the works, and that in it we might get to see Sinestro's fall from grace.

"I've read somewhere recently they've already started writing the second one. And I think it does deal with the fall of Sinestro."

Green Lantern is currently in production in New Orleans under the direction of Martin Campbell. Peter Sarsgaard, Blake Lively, Tim Robbins and Angela Bassett also star.

Green Lantern opens June 17, 2011!

Excellent... MARVEL should learn from DC!

Best not to rush it, and put his falling from grace in GREEN LANTERN II, perfect!

@airbeynoder18: Yeah, that's the idea.

@claybo4131: The poster is close, but they have said that all of the designs are still being tweaked, including Reynolds' mask.

@Hawks: Sorry, bro, it was a photo finish and I already got snaked twice this morning.

IMO the Sinestro/Hal relationship, since Geoff Johns took over, has become just as rich and flushed out as the Batman/Joker dynamic. It's different but equally engaging. A specific example from the comics would be in the lead up to Rage of the Red Lanterns when Hal would visit Sinestro in his Sciencell and the conversations that take place. Geoff has done such an amazing job of making Sinestro so much more than just a villian. He's given him purpose, meaning and motive and a love/hate relationship with Hal. In the comics, I firmly believe that even after all these years, Sinestro believes he's doing what is best for the GLC and will eventually be recognized again as the greatest.
I can't wait to see Mark Strong bring that to the screen. Testing his pupil both physically and psycologically, forming that bond of admiration and respect only to have it crumble in his obsession for order. We are so lucky to have Mark Strong playing this character.

it seems as if everyone starring in this movie, wants to be true to the comic, and when mark strong researches for a role, best believe his performance is going to be great. great find on all of the mark strong stuff.

@getgo—i shall make this comment in the same measured, rational tone this site has become used to in the last 24 hours:

FILTHY ROJOPHOBE! REDS ARE PEOPLE TOO!!!!!! are you saying that sinestro's replacements katma tui and soranik natu are EVIL because they're RED too??? what about THE VISION??? AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

haha just kidding—you're right, of course... in the comics, sinestro was evil from the get-go... they only showed his GL days in flashback... so they were totally using the scary color to mean "evil" just like his obvious name.

@InterestingJohn—by the way, in reference to a comment you made the other day... i think you are absolutely right about Sinestro becoming Strong's favorite villain to date. he's mentioned more than once that he likes his arc from ally to opponent—which is something i don't THINK he done before (at least not that i recall)—and that he loves the fact that even when he's on the "bad" side he still thinks he's doing the right thing. i'm getting the feeling that he sees this as a meatier and more "complete" character than his other recent villain roles.

I'd love to see a hint of his desire for more power, in this one. It sounds like they ARE going to hint at it. I mean: this little "scrap" probably shows Sinestro getting pissed off at Hal for being a little better than him with the ring.

@Brent thanks cause I think they can still tweak Reynolds suit as well, since I think it needs black in it as well as white gloves. Reason why I asked is cause we havent seen official photos of Sinestro thats all
