BOX OFFICE: GOTG Off To A Great Start With Biggest Thursday Night Opening Of 2014

Marvel's gamble looks to be paying off, as the critically acclaimed space adventure earned a very impressive $11.2M from Thursday night screenings -- beating the likes of Godzilla, X-Men: Days Of Future Past and Marvel's own Captain America sequel.

James Gunn's Guardians Of The Galaxy has just shocked the world by pulling in a whopping $11.2M from last night's screenings, actually beating a Marvel's sequel in Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($10.2 million start back in April). The hilarious space opera (which currently sits at 91% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes) also beat Legendary's Godzilla, Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past to give it the biggest pre-show opening of the year so far. Not bad for a non-sequel about a bunch of losers nobody has ever heard of -- just goes to show how bankable and popular the Marvel brand has become, and what a bit of savvy marketing will do for your movie. Plus, it also just happens to be bloody great! You can check out my review HERE.
