BOX OFFICE: GOTG Off To A Great Start With Biggest Thursday Night Opening Of 2014

Marvel's gamble looks to be paying off, as the critically acclaimed space adventure earned a very impressive $11.2M from Thursday night screenings -- beating the likes of Godzilla, X-Men: Days Of Future Past and Marvel's own Captain America sequel.

James Gunn's Guardians Of The Galaxy has just shocked the world by pulling in a whopping $11.2M from last night's screenings, actually beating a Marvel's sequel in Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($10.2 million start back in April). The hilarious space opera (which currently sits at 91% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes) also beat Legendary's Godzilla, Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past to give it the biggest pre-show opening of the year so far. Not bad for a non-sequel about a bunch of losers nobody has ever heard of -- just goes to show how bankable and popular the Marvel brand has become, and what a bit of savvy marketing will do for your movie. Plus, it also just happens to be bloody great! You can check out my review HERE.

People are starved for an appealing film that isn't a remake, reboot, spinoff, prequel or sequel. Well deserved and a great victory for comic book movies in general!

I can see Guardians being the type of film in which word of mouth does it good at the box office. I think it'll open big and then slow burn it's way to 500 million.

*Small spolier*

This movie exceeded my expectations. I was laughing from start to finish but also had some really touching moments. Especially the drunk scene with Rocket. That actually got to me a bit. Amazing character development.

I agree. Rocket was a very sympathetic character. That scene (along with many others) took me by surprise.
