Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was a monster-hit at the box office this year, becoming the top-grossing film at the domestic box office. One of the many reasons the film was such a success was its chart-topping soundtack, "Awesome Mix Vol. 1," which contained songs from the 1960s and 1970s like David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream,” The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” and The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb”. It has sold over a 100,000 copies and in August it hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200. With all that success, it should come as no surprise today that the soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Compilation Soundtrack category. We'll have to watch the presentation on February 8, 2015 to find if they won.

I hated the soundtrack it got OLD really quickly. I wish GOTG had an original soundtrack and I'm surprised how many people like the soundtrack. I mean I saw people raving about the damn thing and all the songs were [frick]ing old. And people were acting like all the music was brand new.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 I think it was used in a scene that was cut from the film, pretty sure you can see the scene (with the music) in the deleted scenes.

@XMenMarvelFan it did have an original soundtrack, composed by Tyler Bates, but this compilation soundtrack is something unique in superhero movies, and the fact that it consisted of some really great songs from that era meant that it resonated with a lot of people. That music was intrinsic to the making of that movie - they played the songs on set, during filming, so everyone knew what tone they were aiming for with the movie. They wanted it to be a bit more fun, and a bit more removed from other superhero movies. That also reflected the fact that the Guardians themselves aren't traditional heroes, but a group of misfits who sort of stumbled into trouble. And, of course within the plot it also serves as an emotional tie between Peter Quill and his mother.

Guardians of the Galaxy must win this Grammy nomination if it can't win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

Awesome, awesome soundtrack! It gave the movie it's personality, and it even felt like another character all on its own thanks to the business with Peter's mother, like AC1 just said.

It'd be great if it won, but let's be honest: Frozen is probably going to sweep all the awards haha.
