UPDATE #2: Vin Diesel Makes It Official “I Am Groot” In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

For months, Vin Diesel has teased working with Marvel on a yet-unknown intellectual property and voicing Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. However, up until today, the Fast and the Furious star was the only one confirming the latter, while director James Gunn and Marvel producer Kevin Feige declared he was all but confirmed. Well, both Diesel and Gunn have made it official today with a photo of the actor posing with a movie-accurate bust of the walking, talking tree-like character.

“Vin Diesel is a super awesome dude, I can't tell you how much I like this guy,” commented James Gunn via Facebook. “I hope this [photo] puts to rest all the silly Thanos-Vin stuff which people just seemed to make up out of nothing.” The director adds that Diesel was never announced initially: “He said he wanted to do it and we said we were talking to him. Everything else was people guessing and thinking they knew what was going to happen” After confirming that recording sessions for Groot have already begun, Gunn also made note about the Groot bust featured beside Vin Diesel in the photo: “This was the bust we used for reference when shooting. It has changed slightly from this since we started animating him.” What do you think?

UPDATE: In case the photo and comments from James Gunn weren't a good enough indication, Marvel.com has clarified that Vin Diesel will indeed voice Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy.

UPDATE #2: James Gunn has also offered another statement on Vin Diesel's finalized casting:
“Yep it is completely official. AND he's amazing. I never knew someone could say I AM GROOT so many different ways and with such feeling (and that sounds like I'm kidding but I'm not!)”

I also think how Pratt, Bautista, and Saldana worked together on set, Cooper and Vin will work together in Mo-Cap and voice acting.

For those of you doubting Diesel, he's actually playing Groot. This was him prepping for the role of Groot:

I hope the movie shows enhanced groot.. Like say he dies (blows up) and comes back miraculously completely vamped up more tree like with branches jutting out his back and elbows and knees

Something is going on. Nobody has officially said that Vin Diesel is going to voice Groot... If he was just Groot they would have announced it already. Is he Thanos?? Or is he voicing both Groot and Thanos (well, Groot doesn't have a lot of lines!)?

It's pretty obvious Diesel will be voicing Groot. Still, it's very possible that he'll be voicing an additional character. When Thanos was suggested, Gunn said "that's not only untrue, but it's an awful (or ridiculous) idea"
