UPDATE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Sets New August Record With $94 Million Debut

The latest numbers are in for James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, and after taking an estimated $33 million on Saturday, the movie now looks set to earn around $94 million for the weekend. We also have the first wave of impressive international numbers. Read on for details!

By JoshWilding - Aug 03, 2014 06:08 AM EST

What a result! Yesterday, many sites lowered their expectations and started predicting a debut of around $92 million. That's still an extraordinary result, but an opening in the $97 million range is something else altogether, especially as it means that it tops Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Can it possibly reach $100 million? Check back here as we'll have more numbers for you soon...

UPDATE: So, the latest batch of numbers are a little lower than those we brought you earlier, but considering the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy was initially expected to open to $60 million, anything over that is an amazing result...especially when it's $34 million more! We also have some international numbers for you here, but the final weekend gross won't be confirmed until tomorrow when today's viewings are taken into account. A surge COULD potentially lead to something a little closer to $95 million or more, so a huge congratulations to director James Gunn.

Wasn't this supposed to be Marvel's first flop?

Wasn't this supposed to be Marvel's Green Lantern?

What happened?

Saw it with my son. We both shrugged it off as just another Marvel film and here we are with a possible 97 million dollar opening weekend. Don't understand it.

Maybe Marvel should make a film about paint drying and see if they can open it to these same results. Knowing the brand recognition and the fanbase, they probably could.

Depressing.

Alright, Marvel fans and movie fans in America. LISTEN UP. It's Sunday. Today is our last chance to get Guardians of the Galaxy to open up to $100 million dollars and beat Transformers 4. From right now until 4AM ET/1PM PT, get Guardians Sunday gross to be above $30.2 million, so it can topple Transformers 4. I mean it, people. This is our one last chance to succeed or else we're finished. SO, C'MON GUYS. DON'T STOP, KEEP GOING. HURRY BEFORE ITS TOO LATE. LETS DO IT.

Saw it last night in IMAX 3D. It kinda sucked that our seats were near the bottom because the theater was stuffed but I still had a good angle of the film.

My only bugs in the film was (spoilers) how in the HELL was Quill and Gamora able to withstand being in SPACE floating around without freezing in seconds? All of that gravity and pressure should've instantly killed them in seconds. Perhaps they didn't freeze as easily because they were near the dying remains of a star that drew heat? But I was a bit shocked that they had a "scientist writer" involved in the film. Maybe it also had to deal with Quill being half alien or something.

Second/last bug: Ronan stopping just to watch Quill dance was so cheesy! lol He could've bit*h slapped him and kept going but whatever it went along with what Rocket was trying to do so I ignored it. (End spoilers)

Anyway I overall enjoyed it WAYYYY more than Avengers 9.0/10 for me. And it was good to see AND hear Thanos. He looked great!

This gotta be the best Guardians review I've seen on RT:

I think because this movie was so obscure and is being so well receivd, it will help the general audience accept AntMan and add to that movie's success.

@JoJo

Haha, nice. I just had people howling at the jokes and there was a large applause at the end. Makes a more fun experience when everyone is walking out of the movie talking about how much they loved it, and telling people about the characters they loved.

Loudest theater experience I ever had was opening night for the Avengers, and when the Hulk changed at the end. People were standing up (almost annoyingly so) and screaming.

Remember, both Quill and Gamora aren't humans, just maybe why they could survive space and the stone ;)

Wow. I think it was a very good movie. I liked it. Not nearly as much as Cap, but I'm biased. I never really read anything on any of the Guardians. I saw them once in a great while in an Avengers comic, maybe, but I never read them.

Anyway, if Cap is to go down this year to another CBM, I'll be glad if it's this one.
