Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has said from the start that he had no plans to make J'Son the father of Star-Lord in the sequel (mostly because his name and personality sucks). However, had Marvel been unable to get their hands on the rights to Ego the Living Planet, could things have changed? Perhaps as this new concept art for the movie is labelled with the villain's name. 

It's possible, of course, that that's just because this costume is quite clearly based on the character's comic book appearance, but this is a very different looking take on Ego to the one we ended up with. 

Regardless of whether the plan for this look was for J'Son,Ego, or just a random piece dreamed up during an early stage in the production process, it's an interesting look and one which would have no doubt made Kurt Russell's character quite a bit different. What do you guys think? Sound off below.

@Doomsday8888 - I think the growing old part was to suit Peter's expectations of what his father figure would look like. He seems to have control over his appearance (as revealed by the other shape he took at the climax briefly) so I doubt he naturally grew older.

Ronin could smuggled himself in, or fire the orb.

Merely looks older so that Peter would believe he was his father upon the meeting. Would be a bit eye-raising if he turned up looking young - would have immediately led the group to suspect that something was wrong.

I'm not entirely sure why, i guess he was monologuing and wanted to get it off his chest and potentially have Peter (who he was convincing) agree with him so that he did not feel bad about doing it. Ego basically wanted to rule the galaxy presumably with Peter at his side - as he was excited about not being alone. Though yeah, this was dumb.

"How many babies will Gamora and Peter make?"
Likely none, will probably have broken up shortly after the events or Gamora will have gone off to find Nebula leaving Peter behind.

@Doomsday8888 - I'm assuming he made himself look old so Peter would be more likely to accept him as his father. For the second part, my understanding is that Ego is so self-centered and dismissive of humans that he really didn't understand why Peter would get mad.

But if you've ever been involved or around a divorce with kids, you've probably seen the kind of weird loyalty mindgames everyone plays with everyone else. "I'm your dad, so if you can love me even when I've done something super evil to you, then I know you'll love me forever."

Quite clear actually. If Ego's form were to age and die, he would just simply build a different one, but he wanted to experience what life was like

Then it talks about impregnating his mom.

He killed her, because he knew he was getting too close and falling in love (another thing he mentions) and also because of his evil plan to harvest his offspring as batteries/backup (a plan that mama Quill no doubt would have issues with)

@Doomsday8888 - yea, the logic is pushed to the limit here, but one could argue that he may have underestimated human attachments and love, thinking Peter being "plugged in and hypnotized" would stop him from having a reaction that strong And fighting back.

Just Goes into the "using one's heart over their head" theme the film had going on.

@Doomsday8888 - I took it as simply, he didn't think it was that bad. He was practically giddy telling Peter about his plan because he thought what he was doing was right. It's the classic villain that doesn't think he's a villain.

Why grow old: He says he needs to return to the planet to rejuvenate. I assumed he hasn't rejuvenated in a while so he looks old.

Why tell Peter he killed his mom: Peter already has Cosmic Awareness and was witnessing Eternity. Ego believed he had already convinced Peter of the bigger picture and that he would understand how meaningless lower life forms are. It back fired.

@Doomsday8888 - What I love about Ego is that he's freaking Ego... everything is all about him. He doesn't stop to consider what Peter is going to think about the fact that he killed his mother... he's too caught up in telling his story about the sacrifices he had to make. Her tumor was about him... about his dedication.

@Doomsday8888 - All the answers said are good, but honestly the reason he told Peter that was certainly to make the story move forward. It's a film thing. How could Peter know he was the villain unless he found out? The film had to move to the final battle, and the finale.

@Spock0Clock - There are actually several articles about it if you do a quick google. Kurt Russle said 90% of the young effects were done using make up not CGI

Should have been J'Son - could have done virtually the same storyline and had the same personality as he did as Ego. Plus it would'nt have led to an over-the-top CGI spectacle at the end which made it feel less personal to Peter's storyline. They kind of wasted Ego, who would have been a great villain for when they eventually get the rights to Fantastic Four.

Would have also removed the weird idea of Ego expanding onto multiple planets, including Earth, that basically set-up a plot hole of why none of the Avengers were around to stop that when it was a time before the Accords.

Ayesha and the Sovereign could have simply been the army under the command of J'Son - would have made them actually relevant to the plot other than providing an unnecessary battery and setting up Adam Warlock (in a scene that contradicts his cocoon being in the collector's lab)

Worth noting that in the first movie Rocket made a bomb that could destroy Moons which they could have recovered from the ship and brought that back for the sequel rather than simply have him use a stolen battery to create a bomb that does the same purpose.

@ThinkBillCipher - Admittedly just remembered that the ship was destroyed in the first movie and the bomb potentially destroyed with it - but they did replicate the ship and Rocket has a habit of building things - with all the pieces he needs to make it being on the ship.

I think it would have been a nice little nod to the first movie taking place about two weeks before this one if they brought back the idea of him taking parts of the ship to make bombs. Could have also explained all the gravity devices he made for the forest scene.
