Marvel Studios has reportedly narrowed its Guardians of the Galaxy lead role shortlist to three, with Cloud Atlas actor Jim Sturgess, Thor: The Dark World’s Zachary Levi and one mystery actor.

While five actors were tested reportedly weeks ago, the shortlist for the lead in Marvel Studios’ James Gunn-directed Guardians of the Galaxy movie has narrowed down to just two, or perhaps three. Hollywood trade paper Variety now reports that English Cloud Atlas actor Jim Sturgess and Chuck star Zachary Levi are front-runners for the Guardians leader Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord.

Zachary Levi, 32, was not included on the previous shortlist, unlike Jim Sturgess, 31. And despite already having a role in Marvel’s shared universe, per Thor: The Dark World as Fandral the Dashing, sources of Variety claim Marvel is impressed with his Star-Lord test and “open to continuing their relationship.” The source also reports that even though Levi & Sturgess are indeed front-runners, an “unnamed third actor may be tested after the holidays.” What do you think?



Marvel Studios presents “Guardians of the Galaxy”—the big cinematic event exploring an interstellar super hero team-up, featuring Marvel characters Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot and Rocket Raccoon. While story details are under wraps, the film is rumored to lead with a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.

Directed by James Gunn from a screenplay by James Gunn, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is based on the Marvel comic book series “Guardians of the Galaxy,” first published in 1969 and revived in 2008. While a director and ensemble cast have yet to be announced, “Guardians of the Galaxy” will assemble on August 1, 2014. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute the film. In addition to “Guardians of the Galaxy”, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and the currently-untitled sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers,” the third highest grossing film of all time, on May 1, 2015.

Sturgess was so good in Cloud Atlas and I could see him as Star-Lord. Levi on the other hand is already in Thor 2, so I don't know how will that work. But he is also a good actor, so all in all, two great choices.

I liked Sturgess in 21 and Cloud Atlas, but get rid of that pedo-stash dude. Wonder who the "mystery" actor is.

Don't understand if they use Levi, why would Marvel use the same actor for 2 different characters?

Even though Zachary Levi is Fandral in Thor 2, he would make a good Star-Lord. But I doubt it will happen.

jim sturges was amazing in Across the unverse and 21 i can totally see him as star lord and zachary levi he's great in chuck but he's already Fandral.....

I had just finally wrapped my head around the idea of Lee Pace, and I was actually fairly stoked about it. I guess the other 2 were cheaper.

Im open with zach levi, since i've seen him In his fandral look, and the dude is almost unrecognizable, so I think it could work for him to play those two roles. If chris evans could do it, he could do it too.

nothing against Levi personally, but we've seen him in action in his 'chuck' show, and if its all the same i'll pass, thank you. not to mention the fact that he's already in the shared universe. i gotta question the reliability of this source.

marvel is way too smart & there are way too many actors to have it come down to him.

sturgess is fine, in fact im sure he'd be great. just not levi for god's sake.

There are enough talented actors out there that Marvel really shouldn't use the same actor for 2 different characters in a shared universe.

you know what - you are the first person to remind me about how cheap marvel is. you might have hit the nail on the head about these guys being cheaper than others. it's sad to think that marvel will choose $$$ over talent, especially when all of their studio films are just killing it financially.

it wont be levi. marvel may love him, but theyre not gonna give him 2 roles in the mcu unless theyre recasting fandral (or he dies in thor 2). So its either Sturgess or the mystery man.

I honestly don't want any of the 2 to get the role because Levi is in Thor 2 and Sturgess doesn't look the part. I hope Joel Edgerton is the 3rd unnamed person.

dammit...see this is why i wanted them to save Zachary Levi for a bigger role...so i doubt it will be him...dammit i would really like him to be starlord....but someone here said maybe Jensen from Supernatural he would be amazing on the role...he has the soul of Han Solo he can do no wrong! lol

Playing 2 characters won't be a big deal if Fandral doesn't get that much screen time & looks different.
