After a rough few years for Hellboy on the big screen, the character's home in comics is still going strong. Dark Horse Comics is sending him back into one of his most acclaimed storylines this December with Hellboy in Hell: Parade of Horrors, a new two-issue series from creator Mike Mignola and artist Mark Laszlo.

The publisher shared a reminder about the book on X, noting that it follows directly from Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood, which launched this month.

What Is Parade Of Horrors About?

The official synopsis from Dark Horse sets up a pretty simple premise with a nasty twist. Hellboy goes looking for a drink in Hell, but his search leads him through a cemetery and straight into a macabre procession honoring Satan's death. With their Lord recently murdered, many of the demons gathered there are not happy to see Hellboy.

The story is set in the gaps between chapters of Mignola's original Hellboy in Hell, which ran from 2012 to 2016. Mignola has said that he gave Laszlo a rough outline built around two dead soldiers from "The Three Gold Whips," and the artist took it from there. Along the way, the series will introduce new characters and reveal more of Hell's history.

"Every time I think we are done with this thing it seems we find there are just a few more bits and pieces to explore, which I guess is a good thing," Mignola said when the book was announced.

The Creative Team

Mignola co-writes the series with Laszlo, who also handles the interior art and main covers. Laszlo previously worked with Mignola on Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Time is a River and Professor Harvey is Gone. Longtime Hellboy colorist Dave Stewart and letterer Clem Robins round out the team, with variant covers from Mignola on issue #1 and Bridgit Connell on issue #2.

Laszlo said that Mignola's take on Hell always felt like a fun visual playground, with "all those dark landscapes, the endless, bleak villages, the set of characters lurking inside."

Hellboy On Screen And On The Page

Hellboy fans have had a complicated relationship with the movies. Guillermo del Toro's two films with Ron Perlman are still beloved, while the 2019 reboot and 2024's Hellboy: The Crooked Man struggled to connect with audiences. Jack Kesy, who starred in the latter, has opened up about that film's botched release, and there is no new live-action Hellboy movie in the works right now.

That has left the comics as the main source of new Hellboy stories, and Dark Horse has been leaning into that. The publisher has been busy with big licensed books too, like its next Berserk volume, but Hellboy remains one of its signature characters more than 30 years after his debut.

For anyone who only knows Hellboy from the movies, Hellboy in Hell is a great place to see what makes the comics special. It is the arc where Hellboy finally learns the full truth about his origins, and Mignola's art in it is some of the most striking of his career. The collected editions are easy to find, so there is plenty of time to catch up before December.

When Can You Read It?

  • Hellboy in Hell: Parade of Horrors #1 arrives on December 16, 2026, priced at $4.99.
  • Issue #2 wraps up the story on February 10, 2027.
  • Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood, drawn by Cyrille Pomes, is on shelves now.

Would you rather see Hellboy return to theaters, or are you happy with Mike Mignola continuing to expand the character's world in the comics?

I'd love a BPRD '50s-set tv series based on the comics.
