A QUIET PLACE PART II Moves To September As Major Studios Continue To Clear Out Of Spring

With Spring looking less and less salvageable in terms of a return to theater-going, nearly every major studio has pushed back their biggest releases to this Fall, and now Paramount has joined the fray.

As confidence in a safe return to cinemas this Spring diminishes, Paramount Pictures has become the latest studio to delay the release one of their biggest blockbusters, as it's officially moved John Krasinski's A Quiet Place Part II from April to September 17.

Paramount is the latest studio over the course of the past twenty-four hours to vacate the Spring, following MGM/EON (No Time to Die), Universal Pictures (The Addams Family 2NobodyLast Night in Soho), Sony Pictures (Morbius; UnchartedGhostbusters: AfterlifePeter Rabbit 2: The GetawayCinderella), and earlier today, Walt Disney Studios/20th Century Studios (The King's ManBob's Burgers; Ron's Gone Wrong).

While the Spring is likely a lost cause, it does seem as though studios have some optimism for a relatively normal summer blockbuster season as the vast majority of releases from May to July have stayed put... at least, for now.

With this latest shift, Warner Bros. is now poised to dominate the Spring box office; however, considering their day-and-date release plan with films debuting both theatrically and on HBO Max, it's uncertain how much they really stand to gain - especially after their Christmas launch title, Wonder Woman 1984, failed to take off at the global box office, and instead became one of the most pirated films of all-time.

Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe will headline the feature, reprising their roles from the previous installment, while Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins) and Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy) join the cast in mysterious new roles. John Krasinski will also appear in the film as the Abbott patriarch, albeit only in a cameo capacity during flashbacks.

Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family (Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe) must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path.

A Quiet Place Part II sneaks into theaters September 17

I hate to be a negative Nancy, but with how everything is looking I won't be surprised to hear that this movie and many more move to 2022. I'd like to be wrong, but I don't think I will be.

Mid 2022 (Summer) is now the absolute earliest for practically all movies. Of-course they don't want to tell you that because then you'd lose interest and do something else for a year.

If that fails, then it'll be Summer 2023... rinse and repeat delaying indefinitely.

All of these date changes are like the worst chess game ever where no one wins and everyone loses all of their pieces.

This movie would totally work on streaming. Maybe dump on Hulu?

All of these delays are just making the consumer not care about movie theaters anymore. I get the pandemic. I GET IT. But ultimately these movie studios are assuming that us consumers are going to flock to theaters when normal returns. What is going to happen is this. Most people will wait for it to come to streaming. Others will wait for it to be released on illegal streams. And the anti-vaxxers will avoid large crowds. All these delays are doing are making it normal to not care for the movie theater industry anymore

Agreed. All these decisions are idiotic. Delaying these is just disconnecting interest people have with the brands and d*cking around with theatres. Movie theaters are practically dead along with pretty much all physical aspects for a long time. Companies need to accept they are going to take an 'L' on every single movie they have made and plan for release in likely the next three or four years.

@DaHyro - surprised Dwight was wrong about Jim’s fate in an apocalypse, didn’t become a jester.

Although he was probably right about Meredith doing okay

Really love Quiet Place but wouldn’t it fall in the category of movie where you could release it on demand and it shouldnt make a big difference. Not like Horror movies have ever been real blockbusters

@dracula - Usually its very true for horror movies but this one actually made a good amount considering their budget and was a huge success with both the critics and general audience. So I can def see why the studio is willing to keep pushing it to be released in theaters (whenever that will be)

Wonder how the rest of the office cast would handle it

Dwight would for sure survive

Kevin would be the first to die after eating a candy bar and saying “oh yeah”

Everyone else might be up for debate

@inkniron - true, Meredith would probably do okay

Ryan and Kelly would probably be kicked out of whatever group they are in and be left for dead if they hadnt gotten their group killed already because of the arguing

This is the one movie I honestly forgot was supposed to release early last year
Scarilian
Scarilian - 1/22/2021, 7:31 PM
I'm 90% sure at this stage that all of this is just pandering from movie companies trying to secure investments despite the movies have zero chance of releasing in 2021. All of the 2021 movies, unless they go online, will not release at all.

Why else would they all be getting pushed back to some of the worst possible months of release such as October, November, December or January 2022. All of which are no doubt going to be Winter lockdowns and people getting sick.
Scarilian
Scarilian - 1/22/2021, 7:31 PM
TLDR:
Empty promises of release dates with no intent to actually deliver the movie, just something to keep people talking rather than lose interest if they were to flat out state they had no intent to release it for years.

@Scarilian - Wimter lockdowns?

What about the vaccine being distributed mostly worldwide by that time?
Scarilian
Scarilian - 1/23/2021, 3:07 PM
@kylo0607 -
Yes, sadly.

UK is aiming for full vaccination by September, but they are saying it won't stop the virus spreading - so they intend to do a lockdown afterwards regardless even if we got to 0 cases (Also to try and prevent it becoming seasonal)

So no chance of any movie release here in Winter.
