AVENGELYNE: Olivia Wilde To Direct Live-Action Adaptation; Margot Robbie In Line To Star?

A live-action movie based on fantasy/horror comic series Avengelyne is in development, and it might just be eyeing a major A-lister to play the lead role.

According to Deadline, the project will be directed by Olivia Wilde (Don't Worry Darling), with LuckyChap, the company Margot Robbie runs with Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, and Simon Kinberg, on board to produce.

The plan was reportedly for Robbie to play the title role, but "her camp is denying that part of it." Doesn't mean it won't happen, but it sounds like other actors might be in the mix. No writer is attached, but a "big A-list" scribe is circling.

The comic was created by Rob Liefeld and Cathy Christian, and focuses on a fallen angel who battles the forces of evil. “Avengelyne resonated so powerfully with the audience because her story of redemption is one that is so relatable," Liefeld has previously said of the character. "A fallen angel, sentenced to redeem herself by serving humanity, Earth is a foreign environment to her, she must adapt in order to save herself as well as mankind. Her dilemma provides humor amidst the larger plot engine driving her journey.”

Deadline's synopsis reads: "Avengelyne is an angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters. She was the most feared warrior in Heaven’s Warhost, having single-handedly broken into Pandemonium, the outer fortress of Hell, to confront the Devil himself. She is a fallen angel, banished from Heaven by God after being tricked into questioning his love for humans. Avengelyne was stripped of all her angelic abilities, other than her great strength and her blood, which, once extracted from her body, could be used as a weapon or a miracle once empowered by quoting verses from the Bible. Avengelyne uses her powers to fight demons on earth and is being groomed to be humankind’s last hope in a coming Armageddon."

Wilde made her name as an actress before garnering attention with her directorial debut, the 2019 coming-of-age feature Booksmart. She went on to helm divisive 2022 thriller Don’t Worry Darling, and is next due to direct Universal’s Naughty, which LuckyChap is also producing.

Robbie is, of course, known for playing Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey and the Suicide Squad movies, and recently raised her profile considerably by starring in and producing Greta Gerwig's Barbie.

Not familiar with this character but she sounds badass. Kinda reminds me of Constantine. Also Olivia has the look. She should play her as well as direct. It can be done. Just hit the gym and get a little ripped.

Also Booksmart was pretty cool. My wife likes that movie. But Don't Worry Darling was hot garbage liquid.

Well they won't be making it for the male gaze, they'll cover her up.

Which will only hinder the movie because men should be the target audience.

Cool!!.

Not a Liefeld fan at all but the premise seems fun and I feel like with Olivia at the helm , it could turn out well.

I enjoyed her feature directorial debut in “Booksmart” but haven’t seen Don’t Worry Darling yet (though I know it was divisive to an extent and controversial)…

Will be interesting to see her helm a genre action film though I wonder what became of her Sony/Marvel project?

For this to work it might have to be a hard R rating on a budget of about $80 million.

@Forthas - Probably but could push to $120M maybe without too much issue as if good $300M BO should be doable even if hard R.

Oh yeah, her story is definitely relatable. I remember when I fought my way into hell to confront the devil himself.

Anyway, this sounds like it could quickly turn into one of those obscure CBMs of the early 2000s and I'm all for it.

Producers will try to do everything they can to get Margot as the lead, if not, they will go after the obvious A-lists of the industry: Ana de Armas, Sidney S, Scarlett.....

and if all of them say no, they will start to look at lesser known names.
Lets see who accepts
