When we first heard about Universal and MGM's Candyman remake, it was unclear if Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) was on board as director as well as produver, but it was later announced that Nia DaCosta (Top Boy) would actually helm the picture.

Now, Peele has explained why he felt the up-and-coming filmmaker was the right woman for the job.

“I was working on Us when this would have happened,” Peele tells Empire in their latest issue. “But quite honestly, Nia is better to shoot this than I am. I’m way too obsessed with the original tales in my head. I probably wouldn’t be any good. But Nia has a steady manner about her which you don’t see a lot in the horror space. She’s refined, elegant, every shot is beautiful. It’s a beautiful, beautiful movie. I’m so glad I didn’t mess it up.”

The mag also debuted a new image from the movie, giving us another look at Teyonah Parris (WandaVision; Empire) as protagonist Brianna Cartwright.

Candyman 2020 exclusive

Specific plot details for Candyman - which was actually developed as a "spiritual sequel" to the original - are still under wraps, but we do know that this retelling will "return to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood."

We recently found out that Candyman had moved from its original release date of June 12 to September 25.

Just hope this movie isn't too artsy. The original was one of the best of the decade with it's dark grim themes and that music was beautiful.

Really wonder what kind of nightmares Jordan Peele has. Get Out almost traumatized me.

I don't get it. I thought the Candyman was a ghost, so why is Black Manta dude seemingly the new Candyman? I know that's how it kind of worked in the original, what with the female lead becoming a ghost at the end, but apparently Tony Todd is in this film as well. Sooooo, are Black Manta dude and Candyman turning into the same person? I should probably wait for the actual movie, but I'm curious about their angle here. Just, to me, making someone being possessed by the Candyman or turning into him sounds........redundant. Candyman was a person before he was a ghost, so any new ghosts would be their own thing. I'm seriously putting too much thought into this, but it's irritating to think of. Movie does look good though, may even check it out in theatres despite my distaste for horror movies.

@ScarletWarlock - not irritating. Your argument is sound.

It's just marketing. The trailer looked very pedestrian, almost straight to video/middle of the netflix-road.

Judging by the trailer it seems well directed and had some interesting shots, I don't think besides the pandemic that anything else will affect this movie's performance in terms of the box office.
