X-Men Casts Gen V Star Asa Germann As Angel After He Impressed In Audition For Different Mutant

Marvel Studios and Jake Schreier are adding another mutant superhero to the cast of 2028's X-Men reboot, as Gen V star Asa Germann will take flight as Warren Worthington III, a.k.a. Angel.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Gen V and Scream 7 star Asa Germann, 28, has been cast as Warren Worthington III/Angel in the untitled X-Men reboot coming to theaters in 2028.

Several cast members were announced at D23 last month, but it was obvious then that wasn't the movie's full roster. Marvel Studios was still working out various deals (Beast, for example, is still expected to join the team), which explains why this news has broken now.

Interestingly, Germann was in the running to play Cyclops. According to the trade, "the Kevin Feige-led studio was impressed enough with Germann that they offered him the part of Warren Worthington III, aka Angel."

Could we be getting the Original Five in the MCU? Beast and Iceman are the only ones missing from the lineup—Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Angel were the rest of Professor X's first recruits—to make that happen. Either way, with Rogue and Storm also in the mix, we're looking at one impressive team of superheroes.

Warren Worthington III, better known as Angel, was one of the original X-Men, debuting alongside Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast and Iceman in 1963's X-Men #1. Born into a wealthy family, Warren developed large feathered wings and initially hid his mutation before becoming the crime-fighting Avenging Angel. He was subsequently recruited by Professor X and became a founding member of the X-Men.

Angel's story took a much darker turn during the "Mutant Massacre," when his wings were severely damaged. Desperate to fly again, Warren accepted Apocalypse's offer to restore them, only to be transformed into Archangel, one of the villain's Horsemen of Apocalypse. His new metallic wings could fire razor-sharp projectiles, and he eventually broke free of Apocalypse's control.

On the big screen, Angel was first played by Ben Foster in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, with Cayden Boyd portraying the younger Warren. Ben Hardy later played a younger version of the character in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, where he was transformed into Archangel.

Germann landed his breakout role as Sam Riordan in Prime Video's Gen V, which spun off from The Boys. His performance as the troubled superpowered student was received positively, and he subsequently reprised the role in the main series.

Directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), the untitled X-Men movie stars Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers, Sadie Sink (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott (Catch-22) as Professor Charles Xavier, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue, and Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Storm.

Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) also stars as Emma Frost, alongside Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), who plays Nathaniel Milbury, an alias of Mister Sinister in the comics. There are rumours that Marvel Studios will also introduce Apocalypse.

X-Men will be released exclusively in theaters May 5, 2028.

Despite all its faults, I thought he did a good job with the material he was given on Gen V. Glad they cast another OG Five member.

@ModHaterSLADE - 100% then they gave them a cameo in the boys after cancelling the show. Had a lot of potential but they dropped the ball on S2.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - uh… Germann is almost 30…

You don’t want them older, you’re probably like me and you wanted some better known actors who don’t have baby faces so we could have seasoned mature x-men, but this is the direction they’re taking and it gives us a solid 10-15 years or more of X-men movies. These actors are more appropriate age-wise for the X-men, even if they’re all baby-faced.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Scarlett Johansson was 24 when she first played Black Widow in Iron Man 2. Chris Hemsworth was 27 when he first played Thor. Elizabeth Olsen was 26 when she first played Wanda Maximoff. Tom Holland was 19 when he was cast as Spider-Man. I don't understand what the problem is here.

@SummersEssex - Yes. He's almost 30 but he plays 18 year olds. That's the vibe they're going for.

@MasterMix - when they inevitably bring magneto into this I’d love to see a recreation of this cover and X-Men #1 when they split to blue and gold.

Also hoping this movie is titled Uncanny X-Men

@Odekahn - Yeah everyone all excited about the OG X-Men as if they've ever been an actual fan of the OG X-Men. None of you read those stories. In my opinion it's super dumb. Could've just started with Archangel & told the majority of his Angel back story off-screen. I'm not moved by the thought of the original X-Men leading this, but I'll reserve my sourpuss doubts to see what happens with the end result. I didn't think I'd like Jean Grey in Spider-Man and I ended up loving it. There are just so many other more interesting characters that could be in there in place of Angel. I honestly wonder if Marvel Studios was like "Jeff, y'know... if you decide to do Angel, we could share the Falcon & Vulture basic CGI with you to save a lot of money"

They'll expect it'll be riding on the increased interest in X-Men following Spider-man: BND, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Wolverine would probably be teased in the post-credits via his claws to generate conversation about who the recast will be.

When the X-Men movie under-performs they'll panic and bring in Magneto for the sequel.
