DEXTER: RESURRECTION Season 2 Reveals The New York Ripper As X-MEN Star Brian Cox Joins Cast

Dexter: New Blood finally brought its titular serial killer back to our screens in a bid to redeem one of the worst series finales ever. However, the revival also received a mixed response from fans, not least because Dexter died in the finale.

Fortunately, the aptly titled Dexter: Resurrection confirmed that he'd survived that gunshot and took the anti-hero to New York for what proved to be a stellar fresh start for the series that first premiered in 2006.

One of the biggest mysteries in Season 1 was the identity of The New York Ripper, a serial killer who spent years terrorising the Big Apple years ago. Now, we know who will play the mysterious Don Framt, as Deadline (via FearHQ.com) has confirmed that Succession star Brian Cox is joining the Dexter: Resurrection cast.

According to a brief character description, "Though no longer active as a killer, he's found a new way to live into his infamy by continuing to taunt the survivors of his long-ago murder spree."

Story details for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 are being kept under wraps, but this is a huge casting addition and one that suggests The New York Ripper will be front and centre in that next batch of episodes. Viewers got hugely invested in the mystery surrounding him in Season 1, prompting the creative team to make Don a bigger part of the second season.

Cox's long list of film and television credits includes X2: X-Men UnitedNurembergRise of the Planet of the Apes, Churchill, the Bourne trilogy, and The Electric State.

From Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips, the series stars SAG and Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) in the titular role of Dexter Morgan.

The debut season of Dexter: Resurrection was a continuation of Dexter: New Blood, following the reunion of Dexter Morgan (Hall) and Harrison Morgan (Jack Alcott) as father and son navigated their own darkness in the city that never sleeps.

Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 was executive produced by Emmy nominee Clyde Phillips (Dexter), who also served as showrunner, and produced by Paramount Television Studios and Counterpart Studios. Hall also served as executive producer along with Scott Reynolds (Jessica Jones), Tony Hernandez (Emily in Paris), Lilly Burns (Russian Doll) and Marcos Siega (Dexter: New Blood).

All Season 1 episodes are now available to watch on Paramount+ for Premium plan subscribers. A premiere date for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 hasn't been revealed, but there has been some talk of it returning later this year. For now, check out the official casting announcement below.

Nice! Resurrection was awesome!

P.S. The little character synopsis, as far as possible character inspiration goes, gives me a bit of a BTK vibe given how he was ultimately caught.

@IAmAHoot - I loved Resurrection season 1, and I'm a huge Dexter fan (and I will watch this day 1), but last season was so good, part of me hopes they stopped and went out on a high note. I hope they can keep the quality up until they finally end the series. Too bad they killed Batista, though. Would have loved to see him forced to team up with the "real" Dex.

@Bucky74 - I have high hopes, but cautiously optimistic is the best way to proceed. If it’s anything like the previous season it will be excellent! And Brian Cox is a huge score.

Didn't he already play Hannible Lector?

@TREE24K - It's not a shared universe. It's not like Feige on re-casting.

Resurrection was great, but I hope he goes back to trying to live a normal life with more attachments to people, I miss the Miami vibe with his coworkers and sister. Dexter trying to be a normal guy was such a fantastic aspect of the original.

@JonAwesome - I respectfully disagree. I felt he was too involved with his personal life and it wasn’t just a mask by the end, just a soap opera. I like him not being secluded and having interesting relationships more like early season 1. It was a mask and that added interesting depth.

@JonAwesome - As much as I liked Resurrection I felt the same about the darker New York setting vs. the bright Miami one. I was hoping he would not settle in NYC after finishing the job with Prater but he would rather head south again. I think even though Baptist officially resurrected him going back to Miami would hardly be an option but maybe somewhere in California, maybe San Francisco or even Hawaii would give similar vibes to Miami. Heading for the West Coast as far away as possible from his prevoius killings for a frech start would be plausible too. Maybe he could wv2n work for the police again. But I think that would be risky. Maybe a P.I. So he can use his skills in forensic again. There was only a glimbs of it in Resurrection but it felt like ot could be more done with it.

Please watch season one. It was perfect. More like this and less like New Blood.

@bobevanz - I was kind of hoping he’d taken Prater up on his offer. Dexter having a benefactor feeding him victims would be a fresh dynamic.

"The New York Ripper." If Lucio Fulci were still alive, he'd sue!

Really wish they would change their mind about Original Sin. I want a Miami-set story again and really enjoyed that prequel series.

Amazing casting. Cox acted his ASS OFF in Succession! Hopefully this season is better than the last mid ass season.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

"Though no longer active as a killer, he's found a new way to live into his infamy by continuing to taunt the survivors of his long-ago murder spree."

Definitely sounds like they're basing him off of the Golden State Killer.
