Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.

Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.

Nice find Josh@. It has the look of the original in those pics. Really excited for this. The original is one of my favorites, i hope the prequel is as gritty feeling. I'll wait for a trailer and more info before i make any judgment on it tho.

DID YOU KNOW? "The Thing" was a remake of the 1951 Classic "The Thing From Another World," which was based on the novella, "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr. John Carpenter's remake was nothing more than a gross-out special effects movie. Although, oddly, it was truer to the novella...

I love how right off the bat, some people assume its a remake, its a PREQUEL, NOT a remake. To those who KNOW its a prequel, Im with you guys on the fact that it hopefully wont disappoint. i hope the ending also ends like that, with the dog being chased by a helicopter.

Smallville4Ever- Uh... which one's the prequel? John Carpenter's, or this one, or both? Cause if Carpenter's was the prequel and if you want it to end in the same way that Carpenter's did, then that makes this one a remake, not a prequel. But if this one's a prequel to John Carpenter's, and you still want it to end in the same way... then you're shit out of luck.

DID YOU KNOW.... Just kidding.... I haven't seen the remake in a while.... I was just putting a little something down for some people who may think that John Carpenter CREATED it....

I actually really like the fact the original had no romantic subplot. More movies need to be brave enough to do that.

@shaman, this one is a prequel. Carpenters was the remake to the 1950's version. I have the Carpenter's version on dvd but cant find the 50's anywhere. check out Upcominghorrormovies.com, that site is awesome and pretty much gives you info on all horror or sci fi movies to come

Oh my god. This looks awesome. Though looks can be decieving, like AVP's first few reveals. Looks like The Thing will be bad ass, needing to be killed with flamethrowers. :) Really cool looking. Sweet find @JoshW.

Jake Overton@ I think most people knew it wasnt John Carpenter´s original creation?... Well at least i knew it.
Carpenter still, like you said made it more truer to the novel than the original movie, which was by the way pretty dumb and unscary. But it can be forgived, because the time back then was very different than the ´80s or time now.

Carpenter´s movie is like the horror movie should be! Its the true face of Monsters! When it moves its quiet and invisible! And when it strikes... It strikes brutally without feelings and remorse!:)

i thought this was a remake of the original not a prequal? some of the people i see in the photos are kind of lame actors and why do they have that girl there was never a girl at all in the original but i guess it isnt THAT big of a deal ha. i forget the black guys name but hes probably going to be the best person in that movie, everyone else is young. john carpenters version was amazing i have that on dvd.
Shaman
Shaman - 10/4/2010, 12:00 PM
Smallville4Ever- Cool! I just might check that site out. But now, if this is a prequel to Carpenter's, then it can't possibly end the same way(dog/helicopter) because it's ending should be Carpenter's remake's beginning. Unless... cause i haven't seen Carpenter's yet, unless you guys meant that Carpenter's STARTED with a dog being chased by a helicopter... THEN it explains why you guys would want this prequel to end in that way.

Wow, i need a drink LOL

Thanks guys! I've never actually seen the original, although this does indeed look pretty good! Guess I'll have to check it out at some point before this prequel comes out. I know it's set in Antarctica, but who else is hoping for a Mary Elizabeth Winstead nude scene? :D

If this movie is shot in 3D and has CGI in it, its going to suck.
Pauul
Pauul - 10/4/2010, 1:35 PM
To try and clear up some confusion - yes, John Carpenters movie begins with a helicopter chasing a dog. The two people in the helicopter are from a Norwegian base that the characters in the movie eventually investigate finding a bunch of dead bodies.

This new movie will be set at the Norwegian base and tell the events which led to the discovery of the Thing.

Anyone who hasn't seen 'John Carpenters - The Thing', I suggest you go watch it now. It's a really good classic sci-fi horror movie and I'm sure you wont be disappointed.

@pauul- that makes sense but a lot of the pics from what i can tell look a lot like stuff from the original movie so thats why i thought it was a remake

Actually, there wasn't one female role in Carpenter's flick. NOT ONE. No wonder it was one of the best films ever made HAhahahH

God I hope this doesn't suck.

If two french guys can make an awesome sequel with fkn GI Joes, then they better come correct on the prequel.

And is that Mr. Eko I see?

The first movie was very good. Seems like they're taking too conventional a mainstream approach with this one. A Blair Witch/Cloverfield approach would be much better/more effective and could be used as a lead-in to part 3.

"World News Tonight: Contact has now been lost with the Russian Antarctic Outpost.."

BTW, the first movie leads into this by showing footage taken by the Norweigan team documenting their discoveries.
supermarioworldE
supermarioworldE - 10/4/2010, 7:34 PM
If they really wanted to give this prequel a sense of authenticity, they should of comprised a cast of only Norwegian actors and have the whole dialogue spoken in Norwegian. That would have been cool
