"Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller THE THING, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet. Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish."

Apparently while reviving the basic premise of John Carpenter's original, director Matthis van Heijningen Jr's The Thing will also serve as a prequel. I think it looks pretty good, if a little too much like Carpenter's movie. Not that that is a bad thing for today's cinema goers but I guess I was hoping for a slightly different slant.

The movie stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Eric Christian Olsen and hist theaters October 14th.

Looks like a remake to me. I don't see ANYTHING new with this movie. Except Winestead. Lucky for them, that's enough to get me into the cinema.

Yes, yes, even more yes! Thank god it's a Prequel. Sold so much, the Original John Carpenter one is still one of my favorite horror films to this day.

I love Carpenter's version with Kurt Russel so I have high hopes for this prequel. Wasn't really wowed by this trailer as I can't tell if the effects are mostly CGI. I hope not as I loved the effects in the 1982 movie. But with Winstead in this I will definitely give it a chance :)

I think except for what I think is some CGI monsters, this actually looks kinda cool.

Especially since it's not a remake, I wish they would call it something else though.

Looks like a remake to me, just all purtied up for 2011. Nothing I've seen so far suggests this as having anything to do with Carpenter's continuity. Not saying this is necessarily a bad thing. Huge fan of the original, Carpenter's remake, and hopefully of this one.

If I wasn't constantly thinking of the original(yes I mean the first remake) I would think this looked very good but you just know it's gonna use all of the best bits. Example, I guarantee we will see the interrogation scene when the blood is tested one by one.

I remember an article stating that the movie would be using several puppeteers just like Carpenter's movie. I think this is a plus.

And this IS a prequel. First off you have the Norwegians, secondly you have the big block of ice that Kurt Russell's team found in the Norwegian camp in Carpenter's movie.

I have a feeling that both MEW and Edgertons characters will survive and at the end one of them will be revealed as the creature...

@benjamitesandwich I think I must make a correction to my last post. I believe you are correct. I forgot about the mad Norwegians in the beginning of Carpenter's film (duh!). Prequel it IS. :)

Looks fantastic.

And yep, it is a prequel. This is the Norwegian base and the movie will apparently end how Carpenter's began.

They are apparently even remaining faithful to what Kurt Russel's character discovered when he visited the base, so it should synch up perfectly.

Though it may be a prequel, outside of finding the block of ice it looks much like the prior two films.

Winstead isn't near enough to get me to the theater or even rent this one. Don't get the fascination with her. She also looks too young to seem a natural fit for the rest of the team. Not really buying her in the role. Now you can lambast me for saying so.

:-P

Is it me or did that guy strangely sound like Liam Neeson.

Judging from the beginning of Carpenter's flick, I bet Winstead dies considering the fact that the two Norwegians in the helicopter were both male. That's just my guess though.

It looks like they did an exact remake of the original - cool. I'll be going to see that.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/14/2011, 12:50 PM
its probably only a prequel in the sense that you see things from the past that you didn't see in the old school one. but it looks like it then overlaps with the events of the old one too.

they showed the dog in the trailer that the creature copied that is in the original, that would make this movie a prequel if it copies the dog at the end

looks good but it'll take alot to be better than john carperters 80s classic.

i hope its a prequel, but alot of it made it look like a remake.

Looks like it's borrowing a little bit too much just from the trailer.

And that CG crap had better be at a minimum. I thought this director was all pro-prosthetics. The guy holding his weird hand near the end of the trailer could have easily been done with makeup, but I could tell from the milisecond of footage that some computer geek did that crap in post. It ruins the illusion!
HellScorpion

It's a prequel, it follows the Norwegians who dug up The Thing and then tried to kill it...
BillyBlack
BillyBlack - 7/14/2011, 1:15 PM
They should've just called it a modern remake or a sequel instead of trying to make this into aa prequel. There are too maky pieces that don't fit. Another example of Hollywood forcing the square peg in a round hole. While this doesn't look entirely bad, it will fail as a prequel. Carpenter's movie is the gold standard. This has lead written all over it.
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 7/14/2011, 1:19 PM
It's a remake then.

looks ok! Hope its Rated-R!

Winstead is hoooot!:P

But why the hell there is chicks in this movie if its a prequel to the original?! Back in the day i dont think they let chicks go to Antarctica. Maybe for a short time but not longer. They were distraction makers i think. Thats why there was only men.

@ Grif - sounds like she's some expert flown in because of their find. Doesn't matter anyway. we all know how this movie ends - kind of a prequel of not - no is surviving but the dog!
