IRON MAN Star Robert Downey Jr. To Headline VERTIGO Remake From PEAKY BLINDERS Creator

Robert Downey Jr. may have spent a decade-plus soaring through the skies as Iron Man, but his next role will see him steering clear of heights as he's been tapped to star in a Vertigo remake.

Deadline is reporting that Paramount Pictures are in the very early stages of remaking an Alfred Hitchcock classic, the 1958 psychological thriller Vertigo, and are believed to be eyeing 2x Academy Award-nominee Robert Downey Jr. (Iron ManAvengers: Endgame) for the lead role.

While it's unclear whether the character's name will be changed or not, the former Iron Man star would play the role of John "Scottie" Ferguson, a former police detective that is forced to retire after a line-of-duty trauma leaves him with vertigo. The original role was played by Academy Award-winner James Stewart.

Peaky Blinders and See creator Steven Knight has been tapped to write the script, pulling double duty after he was also recently announced as the scribe behind the next Star Wars film from Lucasfilm.

In addition to starring, Downey would also serve as a co-producer with his wife Susan through their Team Downey banner, and Davis Entertainment's John Davis and John Fox.

The original film's synopsis reads, "Hitchcock's romantic story of obsession, manipulation, and fear. A detective is forced to retire after his fear of heights causes the death of a fellow officer and the girl he was hired to follow. He sees a double of the girl, causing him to transform her image onto the dead girl's body. This leads into a cycle of madness and lies."

Following his legendary run as Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Downey hasn't starred in anything since 2020's Dolittle, but can be seen later this year in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. He's currently in the midst of filming The Sympathizer for HBO, which has BAFTA Award-winner Park Chan-wook directing multiple episodes.

What’s the game here? You gonna perfect perfection? At the very least, remake a movie thats story was good but execution was poor. This is just bizarre

Nolan would be perfect to direct Vertigo.

Also, maybe Nolan can work with Robert Downey Jr again after Oppenheimer.

Wonder what they hope to achieve by remaking Vertigo. It's imo not one of those classics that warrants a remake

If we're talking about RDJ future films, this one's more interesting:

Robert Pattinson and Robert Downey Jr will star in Adam McKay’s next film ‘AVERAGE HEIGHT, AVERAGE BUILD’.

The film follows a serial killer who gets into politics to change the laws to be more murder-friendly.

I wouldn't mind seeing him lead a drama/thriller. And I have no qualms about them doing a remake. The original will not suddenly disappear. I'm getting old enough to accept that the majority of people haven't even seen Vertigo or heard of it by now.

Love Jimmy Stewart. Love Hitch. Never understood the love for Vertigo. Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, North by Northwest, Rope, Strangers on a Train, Notorious, The Lady Vanishes.... All GREAT films. I just don't understand Vertigo.

@TheSuperMex -

Urban legends would be a great remake. A killer that uses urban legends as his way of murdering. Great concept💯💪🔥🤝

Seems like an odd choice to try and remake one of the two films that are consistently considered the best of all time.

Can't wait for the Citizen Kane remake starring Henry Cavill.
