M. Night Shyamalan's Remain First Reactions Call Supernatural Thriller "Scary As Hell" & "Heartbreaking"

M. Night Shyamalan's latest twisty thriller, Remain, had a surprise screening at Beyond Fest last night, and the movie went over very well with those in attendance...

M. Night Shyamalan's (Unbreakable, Signs, Split) new movie arrives in theaters next Valentine's Day, and the first reactions to Remain are starting to come in following the movie's impromptu premiere at the 2026 Beyond Fest.

With the exception of The Sixth Sense and (maybe) Unbreakable, Shyamalan's movies are usually highly divisive, but these reactions have been overwhelmingly positive so far.

The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who moves to a small coastal town to complete his latest project, where he encounters an alluring young woman played by Phoebe Dynevor.

The recent trailer set up what appears to be a romantic drama focusing on two strangers falling in love, but this being a Shyamalan flick, you know something out of the ordinary is right around the corner!

It looks like Dynevor's character is actually a ghost, but there's probably a slightly more elaborate (convoluted?) explanation for what's going on.

“My new movie began with a conversation, an unexpected one, with a celebrated author, Nicholas Sparks,” the filmmaker said in a recent interview with THR. “He sold more than 130 million books worldwide and wrote one of the most iconic love stories ever, The Notebook. Romance is his territory. Mine’s a little different. I’m drawn to suspense, to twists and tension and stories that leave you just a little unsettled long after they are over. That feels like home to me.”

“We started from nothing, just a couple of questions: What scares you? What moves you? What stays with you? We challenged each other. We traded ideas and slowly wove two very different perspectives into a single, thrilling, supernatural love story. In the end, we get to tell it our own way. Mine through film, Nicholas through his novel.”

Check out the reactions below.

From Warner Bros. Pictures, Remain, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, is an unprecedented collaboration between two of the world’s most creative minds: best-selling author Nicholas Sparks, and visionary filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan.

"When reclusive architect Tate Gordon moves to a small coastal town to complete his latest project, he encounters an alluring young woman who pulls him out of his shell, and into the center of a deadly mystery that hangs over the town."

Gyllenhaal stars alongside Phoebe Dynevor, Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty and Jay O. Sanders. Shyamalan directs from his own screenplay, story by Shyamalan and Sparks. The film is produced by Shyamalan, Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock and Theresa Park, with Sparks executive producing.

Joining Shyamalan behind the camera are director of photography Adolpho Veloso, production designer Sam Lisenco, editor Noëmi Preiswerk, costume designer Caroline Duncan, casting director Douglas Aibel, music supervisor Gabe Hilfer and composer James Newton Howard.

Sounds good , nice to see the positive reception to the film with these reactions so hopefully that’s the case with the reviews too when the film comes out in February…

Anyway , it seemed interesting from the teaser so will likely give it a shot especially with having Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead (him and Phoebe Dynevor seem to have good chemistry)!!.

Shyamalan's One of the worst directors the world has ever seen

@TheNewYorkerr - Yo! You can't say that about the director or Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and even the Village and Split. He's made a ton of misfires since those early 3 but those early three are some of the best suspense movies EVER

@TheNewYorkerr - He's totally a hack and a fraud, (check out the fake "documentary" titled The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan).
He seems obnoxiously arrogant and un-self aware and makes pretty terrible braindead movies with even lamer "twists".

That said, as long as Uwe Boll is out there, M. Knight will have to settle for 2nd worse director of all time.

@Feralwookiee - Provide more specific critiques of his movies so we can get into the conversation.

@IAmAHoot - If my comments up there weren't satifactory enough to explain why I'm not a fan of his, then I don't know what else to say.

He's a bad director and a terrible storyteller imo.
That said, The Happening is pne of the funniest movies I've ever seen. 😝

@Feralwookiee - Okay, what is braindead about The Sixth Sense?

@IAmAHoot - That the entire movie can't happen because Bruce Willis' character SEEMS like he's interacting with the living the way it's framed for the VIEWER, when in fact, he'd figure out real quick that he was a ghost when everyone, including his wife was incapable of seeing or communicating with him.
The trick only works once and if you think about it afterwards, the premise of the movie falls apart.

@Feralwookiee - It's addressed in the movie that the dead see what they want to see. (As in the notion of ghosts...)

Fine, Unbreakable?

I absolutely love M. Night. Yeah, there's a few of his films I had huge dislike for. However, overall, I love his stuff. Signs being my no.1, then Unbreakable, Glass, Old, Trap, and Knock At The Cabin being on equal level for me. The rest? Eh.

@lazlodaytona - Servant on AppleTV is possibly one of M Night's best I feel. It's a show but he did write and direct a lot of episodes and he's one of the producers working on it with his daughter.

Great cast too. Toby Kebbel and Rupert Grint are in it as the leads. Rupert is hilarious. There's tons of moments of unintentional and intentional humor that he lands perfectly

Can't wait. I like Shyamalan. The Visit and The Village are underrated.

Can't wait to find out the Twist. Thats always been the fun part about his films. Keeping the Twilight Zone and Hitchcocian Thrillers genre alive, even if he has a mixed bag.

Shamalalfjtll is not great.

He's had 4 great/good movies and a lot of mediocre and really bad ones. I'll wait until it's free on TV for when I have nothing else to do.
