The future looks a little less bright for the
Friday the 13th film franchise, as Paramount has decided to once again delay the upcoming reboot of the 2009 reboot of the 1980 horror film, this time by a whopping eight months. The film, which would've came out on 13 May 2016, is now slated for a
13 January 2017 release date. Although the length of the delay was necessary in order to maintain a namesake release date, this is not the first time the reboot has been delayed. As a matter of fact, it's not even the second time. Seeing as news of the film has been relatively dry, this could indicate possible behind the scenes problems, though there is no way to know for certain at this point in time.
Regardless, the studio seems determined to breathe new life into the slasher franchise, as a
television series is currently in development at the CW, as well as a
video game by the developers Gun Media and Illfonic. Even if this reboot is ultimately cancelled, it's not hard to imagine another reboot materialising from a different creative team. It's also worth noting that the upcoming reboot, if released, will mark the thirteenth film in the franchise.
David Bruckner is currently signed on to direct the film, with Michael Bay and Brad Fuller serving as producers. The film is being written by
Hannibal producer Nick Antosca.
