Solo HULK Movie Update: Apparently Marvel CAN Make It; They Just Can't Distribute It

When Mark Ruffalo was asked about the status of a solo movie outing for the Green Goliath recently, he said it was tricky because Universal still held the rights. Well, a new report suggests that's not entirely true, and Marvel could, in theory, still move forward with another Hulk movie...

Those hoping for a standalone Hulk flick featuring Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner were disappointed when the actor explained the situation in a recent interview. According to him, it was very unlikely that we'd see another solo big-screen outing for the Jade Giant any time soon because Universal still held the rights. But, Forbes reckon that's only partially true.

They report that the studio would have some say in a new movie, but only the "right of first refusal" to distribute. In other words, Marvel can get working on a Hulk feature at their leisure but it would be Universal and not Disney that would have the right to distribute it once the cameras stopped rolling. However, if they decided not to then Disney could scoop up the distribution rights. That's not an insurmountable hurdle for Marvel of course, but since we know their Phase 3 plans right up to 2019's Avengers: Infinity War - Part 2 don't include a Hulk movie, it's obviously very unlikely to come together before then.

The character is rumored to be a part of Captain America: Civil War though, so fans will still (hopefully) get their Hulk fix fairly soon.

They could just buy those distributional rights a la what they did with Paramount when it came to The Avengers and Iron Man 3.

Disney will pony up money if they want to, but they're not making a Hulk movie anytime soon, so why waste money now?

Planet Hulk or World War Hulk, make it happen. Incredible Hulk was great so lets do a better Hulk movie than that!

Disney could totally buy the distribution rights to Hulk. I just feel like no-one at Marvel really knows how much potential a second Hulk film has, which is a shame.

Well, Marvel, that's what you get for whoring out your characters to every big studio. Should have picked a studio to partner up with (one studio) and just created a solid foundation to build on. Marvel's done pretty well, don't get me wrong, but how much could they take from the industry if they had all of their respective properties in one place? That's one of the reasons we'll never see this on screen:

Say what you will about the faults of DC, but at least their partnership at Warner Bros. has never allowed them NOT to do something.

I just wish Marvel could consolidate with other producers or throw some Star Wars money at FOX to win back the rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four. That would blow people's minds.

[frick]in A, the one character in the avengers that i have loved throughout my life and of course it's damn near impossible with all the red tape to get this solo movie done. I'll take ten hulk solo movies before I can watch another thor bore.

Pretty much figuring/resigning myself to the fact we won't see a Hulk solo until Phase 4 anyways, so they have plenty of time to negotiate with Universal or just straight up buy back distribution if they're confident in their future plans with Hulk.

I just really hope Mark Ruffalo is still game after Infinity War (I think he'll be like 52 years old by then). I can't imagine RDJ will stay after Infinity War (plus the inbetween of Phases seems like the best time for Marvel to recast Stark) and RDJ supposedly has a lot of pull since he and Ruffalo are basically rl actor bros.

Even then, it'd be pretty bittersweet for Ruffalo to finally have the starring role, only for his contract or interest to wane and he leaves before there's even a chance to wrap up a trilogy of sorts (taking into consideration TIH)

@blackandyellow

"Just make a Hulk/Black Widow team-up movie."

Damn, my dude. From a business standpoint, that's an incredible (no pun intended) idea. It would accomplish multiple tasks. You get a focused Rafallo HULK movie that reinforces Widow who can't stand completely alone in a film- all to the continuity of the MCU extending from Age of Ultron. It would be different too. MARVEL should have been contemplating duo films. Why juSt Ant-Man when You can have him and Black Panther?

So let me get this straight.... we are getting a [frick]ing Ant-Man movie. But they can't make a new Hulk movie? Who was asking for a Ant-Man movie?

Also, Batz is having a pool party very soon with the biggest babes you've ever seen. You should all take a load off and come ...I guarantee you will because they all have low self-esteem.

I thought this was said before?

The other thing why Marvel isn't in a rush for a new Hulk movie is because the last 2 didn't do well. While TIH wasn't a flop, it needed to make more money.

For me, the Hulk in Avengers one was visually astounding, then again it was the masters of cgi, WETA DIGITAL. In Age of Ultron, visually the Hulk was lackluster and the visual fx in the movie throughout weren't even close to the previous Avengers.
But my favorite Hulk has to be the 2008 Hulk in The Incredible Hulk. The one we have now looks like he has a beer belly and a cro magnon face. The 2008 version was ripped because he had 0% body fat and was the perfect specimen.
