BOX OFFICE: IRON MAN 3 Holds On To #1 Despite Competition From THE GREAT GATSBY

Warner Bros. must be feeling very pleased with themselves this weekend after The Great Gatsby took an admirable $19.4 million after opening late on Thursday. Iron Man 3 was only slightly ahead with $19.7 million, a 72% drop from last Friday's huge opening. The Baz Luhrmann helmed take on the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald 1925 novel is expected to gross $53 million in its first weekend, although Mother's Day tomorrow may end up giving it a slight boost. Regardless, this still won't be enough to topple Iron Man 3 as the Shane Black helmed threequel is expected to end up with upwards of $67 million over by close of business on Sunday. That's a 62% drop from last week, but a very solid hold. As we reported yesterday, the movie is well on its way to crossing the $900 million mark today, despite Star Trek Into Darkness opening in key territories like the UK. What are you guys planning on checking out on the big screen this weekend?

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man

Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts
Don Cheadle as Rhodey/War Machine
Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian

Iron Man 3 will make a billion dollars. The general public liked it. Accept it. Those are the facts. It doesn't matter if YOU don't like it, facts won't change.

Man of Steel will probably be a good movie, but it is highly doubtful that it will have the same box office success as Iron Man 3.

But it might still have enough of a success for WB to green light a DC movie universe...based on Marvel's modus operandi.

How about we leave it at this fanboys?

Iron Man 3 and The Dark Knight Rises are the only at least decent-good (maybe better depending on you) third entries in a CBM franchise.

By the way, I've seen Iron Man 3 THREE times, and I firmly believe that the 'Mandarin Twist' is HIGHLY overrated.

Right NOW, it's competing with 'The Dark Knight' and the first 'Incredible Hulk' TV-Movie for the best comic to screen adaptation of all time for me, and people need to recognize and take a more reflective look as to WHY the twist was done in the FIRST place and if it works in the long run of the MCU. It does for me.

The Mandarin MAY be Tony's arch-nemesis in the comics, but that says nothing of his inherent lameness, his cream-of-the-crop status above a pathetic rogues' gallery in the first place and the fact that changing him from a ridiculous childhood stereotype to a 2013 reflective model isn't sitting well with our insular comic fans.

I would say that, according to our capitalist system, how much money you have IS a very good way to measure success.

If a movie is making vast amounts of money, it means that people like it enough to go see it more than once and tell others to go see it. bear in mind, the vast majority of the audience is looking for entertainment, not thoughtful fine arts cinema. Yes, it might be a sign of the decline of western civilization, but it is what it is.

Had a friend go see it last night and he was disappointed. Actually i don't know anyone outside the internet who really loved it. Im3 wasn't the best superhero movie but not the worst.

Do your research Racist, I don't troll Marvel articles. I'll state my opinions on them though. Learn the difference. Not a fan of Shit Lantern or even V for Vendetta for that matter.

It's sad that some so-called "fans" have become so jaded and spoiled by these comic book movies that they have to bash one side as "inferior" just so that they can try and validate their own existence, as if their chosen company's success somehow relates to their own. It's becoming so tragically ignorant that you can't go to the comment section of either company without some dickhole trolling. I don't mean the humorous jokes or personal opinions, I mean the shiftless twats, with no life, who spoil films and say the same thing over and over in each thread as if we are not already aware of their bias. It's already evident here and you can't even comment on enjoying the trailer for MoS without some shit-twit trolling for attention. We get it, you read Rotten Tomatoes and the rag sheets to try and justify your opinion with pointless percentages. You quote dollar amounts as if you're getting a cut. Whoopity-diddilee-[frick]ity-doo! You can quote statistics. Bravo. Now go tell you parents that they don't give you enough attention so that you don't have annoy random strangers in your attempt to get it.

I saw The Great Gatsby, it was actually really good. I'm still disappointed in Iron Man 3, so I'd probably say I liked Gatsby more, just because I got exactly what I was told I was going to get.

Would you say that Gatsby was (wait for it)........great?
Ahh............that's better. It's always good to get a pun out of the way.

@PeterDarker121

You read my mind on that last paragraph.
Mandarin was so lame to begin with that I'm glad that they took a different approach with him.

It's like kryptonite in a Superman story. We all know it's going to be boring and someone else will have to step up and help Supes and all that slow and boring stuff that goes with it. Still some fans want to see it.

IRON MAN 3 ROX !!!

I think you guys underestimate the power of women at the box office......everybody I know has already seen Iron Man 3.....thats the bad thing with HUGE opening weekends...that usually means everyone is going to see it in those 3 days....then a huge drop the next weekend.

In college most of the girls all had Moulin Rouge in their rooms.....it was in their permanent rotation of movies to watch multiple times a week.....I figured "Gatsby" was going to show well.....plus it has a huge soundtrack with a lot of todays "hot' artists.....(not agreeing here just saying)

Plus the girls love Leo.....he's like Batman to women....
