He's installing a new floor. The "hand hologram" scene where he was designing the Mk. II in Z-axis space. According to an article on Superherohype, during the set visit they needed to wear special shoes because the floor had to be kept clean. It was explained that floor was a part of the evolution of Tony's technology.

Oh,and by the way,I might've figured out what he's doing,thanks to quote from the first game:
