It's no secret that Iron Man 3 has dominated the box office this year, but what get's lost in the shuffle is how much the film dazzled audiences this year. Total Film recently released a list of the top 50 films of 2013 and ranked #4 is none other than the third outing of the Iron Avenger. It came in just behind 'Zero Dark Thirty', 'Before Midnight' and 'Gravity' to become the highest ranked CBM on the site's year end list.

Not to be left out, Man Of Steel and Thor: The Dark World clocked in at #28 and #34 respectively.

One thing to keep in mind when assessing this list is the fact that it was voted on by the magazine's writers and featured some somewhat controversial placements ('Prisoners' at #43, 'Fruitvale Station' being off the list, 'Much Ado About Nothing' even being on the list). Either way, it's great to see further proof that in the sea of films released this year that CBMs are without a doubt a force to be reckoned with

Below is Total Film's take on the Marvel Studio's blockbuster

What do you guys think about Total Film placing the movie so high? What were your favorite movies of the year? Sound off in the usual place

Seriously? This is why I pay little attention to critics. IMO I'd say its one of my least favourite movies of the year. And not because of the mandarin twist - that was the least of the movie's problems.

But glad to see MOS and Thor 2 make the list - both were far superior to IM3. Hell even Wolverine was way better than IM3 and I'd say it was the 2nd best CBM this year behind MOS.

-Misguided directing
-Paper-thin supporting characters
-Laughable plot twists
-Massive plot holes (extremis was so inconsistent/unexplained)
-Very odd tone (tried to be a dark comedy or something? Just didn't work)
-Lack of meaningful character development
-Overall a very boring movie

@intruder Your'e living on a Fantasy Island if u even think this wasn't the worst CBM of the year. At best its on par with Kick-Ass 2, which isn't a good thing.

but to each his own i guess

Ok then... "misguided directing" ties in largely with the "odd tone" in that I don't think Shane Black was the right one to direct the movie. His visual style just didn't work for me. The movie should have been much more serious given the subject matter and they attempted to do it (Stark's PTSD) but failed due to the misplaced humour (a growing issue for Disney). "Laughable plot twists" mandarin. "Lack of character development/paper-thin side characters" - Maya Hansen was so underdeveloped that she went from good to bad to good in a matter of 20min and then died and I still was unsure of her purpose really. War Machine was completely underused etc... Tony ends each movie by experiencing the same development/turning point essentially but by the start of the next he is the same old Tony. The plot holes are a huge deal apart from the extremis. The movie just didnt work for me.

You liked it I didn't. I agree it was unconventional but that doesn't equate it to be good film. Im not a child nor a troll. I don't need to get older to appreciate a film I didn't like. I've seen it twice and liked it even less the second time

"...'Much Ado About Nothing' even being on the list..."

Sorry, what? Much Ado was a fantastic movie; I really don't see why you're calling it a "controversial placement."

Iron Man 3 was a better movie than all other CBMs this year. Some guys are just too butt-hurt over the twist to see the movie for what it is.

Saw it once in theaters, haven't seen it since. It was better than Iron Man 2 for sure but still a let down IMO. Nowhere near the #1 CBM of year for me.

@SpiderParker I think a lot of people hated the twist but to me that wasn't even the problem. I knew the twist going in so that didn't even bother me when it happened. It was everything else that ruined the film.

@Nick No movie is flawless, I didn't like the twist or Pepper saving the day either but overall the movie was great just not better than Iron Man. And maybe you don't like the movie for different reasons but most people only dislike it cause of the twist.

imo -

MOS: A flawed film but ultimately an interesting examination of the superman character and the perfect portrayal of the character for the 21st century. The visuals, action, directing, music, etc... were all spot on.
WOLVERINE: The perfect Wolverine movie and another CBM film to follow the trend of getting to the root of and exploring the character. The film falls apart a bit in the 3rd act but the Japanese impact on the film's writing and directing in act 1 and 2 make up for it.
THOR 2: Far superior to the first film and a generally fun popcorn film. On par with the likes of Incredible Hulk and Cap 1
IM3: Attempted to be character driven but fell vastly short due to an inconsistent narrative and tone. Slightly better than IM2
KICK-ASS 2: Wasn't really a fan of the first, liked this one even less.

@SpiderParker Yeah for me its different reasons. Nothing clicked in general imo. ANd I agree I really enjoyed Wolverine and MOS but they had some pretty big flaws but I found the ones in IM3 to be more detrimental on my viewing experience.

Still overall a solid year for CBMs

The twist isn't what made Iron Man 3 a bad movie. Everything up until after the mansion getting destroyed was perfect. Everything after that…..felt like a different movie entirely. The scene that actually got to me the most was the unnecessary "girl powered" Extremis Pepper. That really bothers me to no end. I love great female characters. I'm ecstatic about Wonder Woman finally appearing on the big screen. But that was poor and needless handling of the character. It felt like a forced in scene. Defenders really should stop saying people were "butthurt" over what was a poor excuse of a twist anyway. No. Because even people who had no idea about Mandarin agree that the movie was simply not up to par. And everyone is entitled to their own opinion anyway. Who cares if someone liked it or didn't? But the animosity over opinions is beyond childish.

Now Fruitvale Station not being on the list is the real crime here. That was a phenomenal film.

@0megaDaGod

Actually that's the only scene I liked in the latter half of the movie.

@Jollem

I always felt had Returns ended there, it would have been perfect, although a short movie.

For me my favorite moment of the CBMs I saw this year has to be when Superman first puts on the suit and learns to fly. That scene made me feel like a kid again.

The plane sequence in Iron Man 3 was one of the only moments that actually felt like an Iron Man movie to me. I loved it
