Thorbuster Creator Mike Grell Shares His Thoughts On It Showing Up In The MCU

It's unlikely that we will see the Thorbuster armor in this May's Iron Man 3, but in a recent retrospective about the creation of the Arsgardian powered suit, creator Mike Grell has shared his thoughts on how a live-action battle between a suited up Tony Stark and Thor would go down.

The battle between Iron Man and Thor ended in a stalemate in Marvel's The Avengers, although the God of Thunder clearly had the advantage. However, there's a certain suit of armor that would definitely mean that Tony Stark would be able to hold his own against the Son of Odin. A decade ago, the "Thorbuster" armor made its debut in the pages of Iron Man #64, and creator Mike Grell had this to say in a recent interview with MTV Splash Page. "Seems to me you're talking about the difference between technology and the power of the gods. Tony is a scientist and engineer who understands every aspect of the technological world. He'd probably think magic is just mumbo jumbo... until he saw it work for real. Then, even if he couldn't explain it, he'd have to admit it exists and would try to find a way to utilize it." In the comics, Tony was able to use this suit - which was powered by an Asgardian crystal - to stop Mjolnir from hitting him and redirect Thor's thunderous attacks. In the end, Thor ripped the suit of Tony (who made his escape in a regular suit of armor moments later). So, how does Grell think a similar battle would go down on the big screen? "Exactly the same. This is Hollywood. Thou shalt not break the formula." Be sure to click on the link below to read much, much more about the Thorbuster armor!

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Iron Man must always lose against Thor, just as Iron Man always loses against Hulk even with Hulk Buster armor. These are just common sense things that should never change.

In the DCU, Superman always should beat Batman, again, common sense thing that shouldn't be an argument but it always is with Bat-Fanboys.

If the Hulk and Thor buster suits make their appearance in the movies I would prefer it to clear that even the suits are no match for the real thing. Sure they allow Tony to hold his own for awhile but ultimately the Thorbuster doesn't out Thor the real thing and the Hulkbuster doesn't out Hulk the real thing.

The only reason Superman would lose to Batman is if Kryptonite is present.

Because of RDJ's popularity as Iron Man Marvel Films and Comics have Iron Man doing things the armor just could not do.
If Thor can hit cars hard enough to send 5 tons flying through the air, one hit from Thor would cause such massive damage to the Iron Man armor the suit would be instantly totaled.
The suit would have so many elements that must fit together perfectly just to be able to move. A hit from Thor would dislocate, bend or break essential parts of the suit instantly. Not to mention crush vital electronic hardware and even send massive shockwaves into the one wearing the suit.

Iron Man can be fun to watch but the armor concept we see in the film is completely implausible.

While I love the idea of the Hulk and Thor Buster armors, I have to agree with Bob Layton "I felt that the regular armor has always been sufficient to 'bust up' the Hulk."

Pre-Hulkbuster (the first "buster" armor type) Iron Man had went toe-to-toe with both Hulk and Thor on more than one occasion and was able to hold his own.

Once, he knocked out the Hulk by focusing all of his suit's power into his right hand, and gave Hulk a super punch! Knocked the bastard out (at the expense of his life support).

I love the busters, but I don't like when the regular armor is sometimes not given the credit it deserves.

Thor v Iron Man in The Avengers "ended in a stalemate??" I'm sorry, were my eyes deceiving me when Thor ended it by knocking IM flat backward with one blow without even looking at him? Granted, IM might/could have gotten back up, but Whedon knocked Tony's power level up by 400% just so he could hang with Thor for at least a little while.

I don't see IM being able to deal with Thor for an extended period of time, even with the Thorbuster armor. Thor is ultimately just too powerful, and we rarely see him really let loose.

@DanteSparda Even so, in that world he should not be able to withstand a strike from Thor. Best thing a writer could do is just not write it.

High likelihood we'll see the Destroyer/Thorbuster and (the real) Hulkbuster suits in A2, given that Whedon has said he wants more interactions within the team (aka tension and infighting), and some of the suits that'll be shown in IM3 are probably prototypes for the Thorbuster and Hulkbuster.

Yeah, if Tony could simply build an armor that would allow him to beat someone like the Hulk or Thor (buster armors) then he would just wear that one ALL the time.
I understand he designs armors to allow him to go up against different threats, but if an armor would allow you to withstand Thors arsenal, it would pretty much allow you to beat anyone else.
Tony with "Thorbuster" will only last a few extra hits, but he still loses in the end. Same with Hulk/Hulkbuster matchup.

I would like to point out that Batman would and has beat Superman. Sure if Superman attacked Batman without warning he would rip him to shreds. But Batman has always had kryptonite in his possession since learning about supermans weakness.

Batman has the technology to engineer kryptonite napalm. He has spent many many hours thinking about how to beat superman if it would ever come to it, while Superman has probably given beating batman little thought.

TL;DR Batman would use kryptonite to beat Supes cause he's the goddamn Batman!
