THE BOYS Star Karl Urban Casts Doubt On DREDD Return While Discussing Future Plans For The Franchise

The Boys star Karl Urban has shared another update on his involvement with that long-rumoured Dredd sequel/continuation, but it doesn't exactly sound overly promising. Find out more after the jump...

Dredd was released to overwhelmingly positive reviews back in 2012, but it failed to find an audience in theaters. In the years that followed, the movie has become something of a cult classic, and demand for a sequel has never really gone away.

In 2017, Judge Dredd: Mega-City One was announced, but there hasn't been a huge amount of movement on that front since. Speculation has continued running rampant that the live-action series could include actor Karl Urban, and seeing as The Boys star did such a phenomenal job as the character, it's hard to imagine anyone else playing Judge Dredd on the big or small screen.

Unfortunately, the latest update from Urban isn't overly promising.

The Guardian asked about his future as the protector of Mega-City One, to which he responded, "Regardless of whether or not I’m involved with it, I think it’s such a wonderful property. John Wagner and his entire staff of writers and illustrators have created so many wonderful stories that I, personally, as a fan of Dredd, would love to see. I can’t wait to see what they do with it."

So, yeah, it doesn't exactly sound like he's signed up and ready to start shooting! There's always a possibility he's playing deliberately coy, but a decade after Dredd was released, something tells us Urban has probably moved on (as have the franchise's producers).

A reboot would be no bad thing, though it might be best to stick to the small screen and explore this character in a way that helps make him of interest to hardcore comic book fans and newcomers to that 2000 A.D. world.

Would you like more Dredd with Urban back as the Judge?
