JUSTICE LEAGUE Composer Danny Elfman Gives A Peek At His Process Of Scoring The Movie

Tasked with providing an iconic score for DC's flagship team, veteran composer Danny Elfman had to find a way to incorporate old and new themes in an exciting way. Hit the jump to see how he did it.

Most of the DC films since Man of Steel bear Hans Zimmer's mark as composer.  When Hans decided to move on to other projects, Junkie XL was hired as the sole composer for Justice League. Unfortunately, after a personal tragedy, Director Zack Snyder was unable to complete post-production on the film. Shortly after that, Joss Whedon, his replacement, chose not to use Junkie XL's work on the project. Joss then hired Danny Elfman at short notice to provide a score that was more in line with his take on the characters.

In this video from DC, Danny Elfman articulates the thought process behind why he chose to re-introduce certain classic themes while retaining some of Hans Zimmer's work.

Check out the video below and tell us whether you are happy with his work or if you think Junkie XL's music is more suited to the aesthetic established by Zack Snyder.

I haven't watched Justice League yet, but I really found the score enjoyable. Might not be anything new, but it's nice hearing altered versions of some classic themes as well as some fairly nice new ones.

The OST ain't great.. due largely in part to having mostly storyboards to write to and on a tight deadline. But I loved what he did with the WW theme, I think he improved it to be honest. Loved the addition of the classic Batman '89 theme too. However, I was missing the MoS theme... would have loved to had heard it during Superman's arrival in Russia.

@HubbleFunk - There’s a little bit of it when they’re bringing his body onto Zod’s ship, but yeah, they would’ve used it more (the scene where he reunites with Martha would’ve been a perfect moment to use it).

I still find it very frustrating that he chose to almost completely ignore the great scores from the last films and just rehash his old music... The fact that the Avengers Theme is LITERALLY in the soundtrack is ridiculous.

@Jahleel007 - Wait really?? Where is the avengers theme in the JL soundtrack? That's insane if true.

I don't like BVS but I love the score. As for JL, I don't like the movie AND the score. So, yeah, that's what it is..

I enjoyed the score didn't it was as great as MOS and JL however I did like it. Hero's Theme and Home are the standouts for me. Missed opportunity for the MOS Superman theme however...

It all worked with the movie, but as something standalone, it's completely forgettable.

I like Elfman, but he is no Hans Zimmer. Among all of the other crap that has taken place in the DCEU, the fact that it helped turn Zimmer off of comic book films is among the biggest losses. What a tragedy!

@Forthas - I believe, regardless of how Batman v Superman was received, he would have retired from Comic Book Movies. It was getting to be the only thing he did for almost a decade and, with his massive body of work (The Lion King, Driving Miss Daisy, Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc.) he didn't want to be known only for his Comic Book Movie scores. He even said as much. I just wish he had finished with Justice League. I think he and Junkie would have provided the perfect score for, not only the League and the last three heroes, but for the DC Films Cinematic Universe as well.

I really liked that he worked the old Batman and Superman themes into this, but beyond that I can't really remember anything about the music, which is a shame because I loved the scores for MoS and BvS.

So...the JL OST was just a half-assed temp score?

BritishMonkey

@Brave - The irony considering not too long ago he was complaining about using and relying on temp scores.

The funny thing is -- when I heard the classic Batman and Superman themes, I was instantly taken out of it.

This score is one of the reasons the movie is stumbling. It ignored man of steels awsome score for the most part and was just a giant pile of underwhelming nonsense. Didn’t Elfman also score ultron?? Am I wrong?? Heroes unite was amazing in the 1-2 minutes it plays for.

i cant believe no one likes the theme for when flash runs... i mean i cant even remember it.. but what i remember is that its cool aha
