20th Century Fox Sets Release Date For KINGSMAN 2; Taron Egerton On Board
Despite the busy schedules of star Taron Egerton and (potential) director Matthew Vaughn, 20th Century Fox have pushed on with the sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service, locking in the former for filming early next year, and setting a 2017 release date. Read on for more!
For a second there, it actually looked like the sequel to this year's Kingsman: The Secret Service may not happen. Director Matthew Vaughn has been busy working on the script with Jane Goldman, but has since been linked to helm a number of different projects (including spy thriller I Am Pilgrim), while there were reports about a scuffle between Fox & Lionsgate over the services of star Taron Egerton - who is also set to shoot Robin Hood: Origins next year.
Thankfully, the latter situation was resolved last week (per The Hollywood Reporter). Principal photography on Kingsman 2 willl begin in April 2016 (with Egerton, and hopefully Vaughn), while filming on Origins was pushed back to the end of next summer. According to BoxOffice.com Fox have now scheduled the sequel to arrive in theatres on June 16th, 2017.
The Secret Service surprised most people by racking up over $400 million at the global box office - in February. If all goes to plan, we could be looking a summer box office smash in its sequel. It's a packed release date though, and it'll have to contend with Cars 3 on opening day, before fending off competition from Wonder Woman and Despicable Me 3 over the following weeks.
