Based on Mark Millar and Dave Gibbon's Kingsman: The Secret Service, the 2015 movie of the same name was a hit and made a star out of Taron Egerton. That was followed by a sequel, The Golden Circle, in 2017, and we got a prequel - The King's Man - back in 2021 after several COVID-related delays.
A third instalment of the main franchise has been in the works for years now, and we've known for a while that it will close the book on the stories of Eggsy and Harry Hart.
Talking to Collider about his new movie, Argylle, filmmaker Matthew Vaughn acknowledged that the gap between the second and third instalments has been perhaps a little too lengthy (seven years and counting) and made it clear he wants to get Kingsman 3 made as quickly as possible.
"So Kingsman 3, we've got to get on with before Colin [Firth] is way too old and dare I say it, Taron's [Egerton] getting on as well," Vaughn explained. "So, Kingsman 3 is definitely the conclusion of their relationship. Act one is being written. Act three is being written. Act Two needs some work, right? And so we know how it ends, we know how it begins."
That's a promising start and Vaughn would go on to confirm that he owns the rights to the Kingsman franchise, meaning if 20th Century Studios (formerly Fox) declines to make the threequel, he can shop it around elsewhere.
While the first two movies were successful, The King's Man was a critical and commercial disappointment, earning a mere $126 million worldwide. That alone could make a third chapter a hard sell.
Last year, Vaughn talked about his plans to continue expanding the Kingsman franchise both on the big and small screens. "I mean, we've written - we call it Kingsman: The Traitor King - which is about the rise of Hitler and how the English aristocracy helped Hitler come to power," he teased. "So again, we think it's a piece of history that should be told properly."
"And I love the idea of doing a Kingsman set in the 60s; I just think that would be fun and just different," Vaughn added. "But the most important thing we need to do before, I joked, is get on with Kingsman 3; the idea is that I don't want Taron being Arthur at the end of the table and Collin being a portrait."
Kingsman 3 doesn't currently have a confirmed release date.
