Could Jennifer Lawrence be planning a Marvel return? According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, The Hunger Games and X-Men franchise star has met with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, potentially opening the door to an unexpected return to the superhero genre for the Oscar-winner.
As always, this report should be taken with a pinch of salt until Marvel Studios, Lawrence, or even the trades comment on a possible MCU debut. No details have been shared about what the pair might have discussed, and it may well have just been a general meeting.
Lawrence is no stranger to Marvel, having played Mystique in 20th Century Fox's X-Men prequels. She made her debut as the shape-shifting mutant in 2011's X-Men: First Class before reprising the role in X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix.
Although Lawrence's time as Mystique ended with the latter movie, Marvel Studios is now preparing to bring the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Jake Schreier's upcoming reboot.
As the franchise undergoes a major transition and says goodbye to the original big-screen X-Men in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, speculation about which familiar faces might return before the Multiverse Saga ends is inevitable.
Whether Lawrence could return as Mystique before the Multiverse Saga, take on an entirely different character, or simply have met with Feige for an unrelated project remains to be seen.
"Acting-wise, it was the best experience I’ve had [on these films]," Lawrence said of her time as Mystique and her farewell in Dark Phoenix in a 2017 interview. "[Simon Kinberg has] been writing these characters for so long, and he knows them so deeply. I suddenly felt more connected to my character than I ever have been before."
"It was unrecognisable," she added. "Everything was on time. Everything was organised. These movies have always been fun amidst chaos, and now they were fun with no chaos."
Directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), the untitled X-Men movie stars Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers, Sadie Sink (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Jean Grey, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue, Asa Germann (Gen V) as Angel, Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Storm, and Christopher Abbott (Catch-22) as Professor Charles Xavier.
Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) also stars as Emma Frost, alongside Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), who plays Nathaniel Milbury, an alias of Mister Sinister in the comics. There are also rumours that Marvel Studios will introduce Apocalypse as the next Saga's big bad.
X-Men will be released exclusively in theaters May 5, 2028. Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
