New Rumor Says Disney Is Looking To Buy Out Spider-Man Rights For A More Reasonable Price

While it was previously speculated that Disney was looking to buy the rights to Spidey outright, it was rumored that he was going for 15 Billion. However, a new report points to a much smaller number!

Disney and Sony have had their share of press in the past several months during the Spider-Man debacle in trying to figure out a way to share the popular hero which keeps everybody happy.

Fans were pleased to know that they finally reached a deal which sees Tom Holland's version of the character in at least one more solo movie and another MCU flick beyond that. But then what?

Mikey Sutton runs the private Facebook Group Geekosity but has a proven track record with his scoops in the past. Sutton has sources at Disney which tell him that the House of Mouse is actually looking to purchase Spidey outright after all, but for a much more reasonable number than we had initially heard.

SCOOP – 10/9/19: Disney wants to buy Spider-Man. While rumors have circulated before the Sony-Disney dispute of such a purchase, it was mere speculation, especially the erroneous high number that was quoted. What I’m hearing is that Disney is looking to offer in the range of $4 to $5 billion for Spider-Man. But now the questions will be asked.

Even 5 billion would be a mere third of the massive 15 billion that it was previously reported Sony would be asking for. While Sutton states that he only has heard from the Disney side, 5 billion is an enticing offer, especially as it is more than Disney paid for Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and the rest.

Marvel’s most well-known hero, and with Iron Man and Captain America gone, they need an anchor in the MCU.

What do you think of Disney potentially buying out the rights? Be sure to let us know in the comments and if you haven't seen it yet, check out the trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home below!

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is currently available for purchase on Blu-Ray and 4KHD.

The answer for Disney is to TRADE some of their newly acquired R rated IP's from Fox in exchange for Spider-man. If Star Wars went for $4 billion, there is NO WAY that Spiderman is worth $15 billion. I would say $2 billion max!

@Forthas - supply and demand Sony has the one trade chip Disney needs

@Forthas - @Forthas - Id say Lucasfilm was just sold wayYyyyyy too cheap, for the last 5 years just look at the combined box office of what Spider Man HC, FFH, ITSV, and Venom made. Not to mention the full character library. I could see it being worth $10-$12 billion, there is a lot of ip to be mined in just the spider man universe.
Trading some of the new R-Rated IP and mayne paying 4 or 5 billion outright seems like a smart move tho

@Grodd87 - I don't think Disney NEEDS Spider-man. They have hundreds of other heroes and villains they can develop. Sure Spider-man is a top IP but Marvel will still do VERY well without him.

@Forthas - Yeah $3 billion and the Apes or Aliens/Predator franchise seems fair.

@Armageddon26 - Agreed. A 40 plus year property and he sold it for way too cheap. Now he been bitching about Disney not following his treatment.
Well George old boy....ya should have done episodes 7 to 9 and then sell the property !

@Forthas - Only 2 billion for Spider-Man? What are you talking about? The last movie grossed a billion and probably made at least 600 mil profit. So you'd be even in a few films. Spider-Man's probably worth 4 billion. Star Wars went for a steal. Lucasfilm was actually valued at 17 billion at the time.

$15B is insane! The Spider-Man property has not even made Sony anywhere near that amount since the first movie in 2002. It's taken those movies over 17 years to make a little over $7B.

I can’t see Sony going through with this either way, but it would be so wonderful to have Spidey and all of his characters in the MCU’s full control. Then we could finally see things like Kraven in Black Panther or a Dark Reign adaptation. Plus we could be secure in the knowledge that Sony can no longer pull him out of the MCU at a whim and ruin him with their horrible extended Spiderverse they’re humbling to create.

I think this would be the one time I wouldn't mind Disney purchasing something, though I can't see Sony letting him go easy.

If Apple buys Sony, then don't the Spiderman rights go back to Marvel?

@polarkyle - It depends on what Apple does with Sony, if Apple keeps Sony as it is, then the contract is still valid as Sony Pictures still exists, but if Apple dismantles/disbands Sony, anything that makes Sony non-existent, then the rights revert back to Marvel, as the contract is no longer valid

While this is what I want I don’t see Sony going for such a low price. Between Venom and Spiderman they could make that themselves in 5-10 years and they don’t have any other heavy hitting film properties. PlayStation May be selling like gangbusters but their film division has only one golden goose at this point. She’ll out like 10b it’s not like you can afford it and you’ll make it back on the toys and addition of Venom and Spiderverse into the MCU

I doubt Sony will sell its most (only) profitable property at this point.

This should be reality check for anyone who doubts the popularity of the Spider-Man character: The film rights alone are considered more valuable than what Disney paid individually for ALL of Star Wars IP or essentially all of Marvel Comics.
