Universal Studios tried to revive their classic monsters with 2004's Van Helsing, which starred Hugh Jackman ("The Wolverine") and Kate Beckinsale ("Underworld"). It featured a bunch of monsters: vampires, werewolves and Frankenstein's monster. But there was another monster that was supposed to appear in the film - the Creature from the Black Lagoon (also known as Gill-man) . Sadly, the scene didn't make it into the film, but you can view the storyboards below that storyboard artist  Doug Brode ("Looper") worked on.

For those of you not familiar, Gill-man was featured in the 1954 film the Creature from the Black Lagoon and its two sequels, Revenge of the Creature (1955) and The Creature Walks Among Us (1956). Universal has made several attempts to reboot the franchise but they've been unsuccessful so far. Though, hope was renewed in July of this year when Universal hired Alex Kurtzman ("Star Trek Into Darkness")  and Chris Morgan ("Fast & Furious") to oversee interconnected stories for their classic movie monsters: Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, Creature Of The Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man, Bride Of Frankenstein, and The Mummy.
VAN HELSING (2004) - Legendary monster hunter Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) is summoned to mysterious Transylvania on a mission that will thrust him into a sweeping battle against the forces of darkness! With non-stop action and electrifying special effects, Van Helsing is an adrenaline-powered motion picture event.

Actors: Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale, Richard Roxburgh, David Wenham,
Shuler Hensley, Elena Anaya, Will Kemp, Kevin J. O'Connor,
Alun Armstrong, Silvia Colloca, Samuel West and Robbie Coltrane.
Director & Screenwriter: Stephen Sommers Screenwriter Stephen Sommers

Van Helsing is one of those films I love despite the clear flaws. It's just a damn good time. Love the action, the pace, the characters, the music, and how it embraces the camp and over-the-top nature of it all.

I always thought back in the day that if they were to make a sequel, that the likes of the Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Invisible Man should have been brought on board.

I liked this movie as a kid. I still watch it now, probably only because of Kate Beckinsale.

That would have been cool. Van Helsing is a very under appreciated movie IMO. I'm still a fan 10 years later. One of Silvestri's better soundtracks too.

Man, they really missed out on an opportunity to make a sh*t movie no more or less sh*tty. . .Way to drop the ball Stephen Sommers.

Hmmm... I can dig it. Loved both the Van Helsing and Black Lagoon movies. Would have loved to see this, but those story boards are crap.

I hope the Van Helsing reboot is miles better than the 2004 movie.

They need to make the reboot dark and gritty.

Van Helsing was a pretty bad movie overall but being a huge Universal Monsters fan, I'll admit that I dug it.

Also, I'm fully aware that video is from Monster Squad. I just added it to my comment 'cause I've always loved that design for The Creature/Gillman.

I enjoyed Van Helsing big time. Camp but fun movie. Even if they turned Prof. Van Helsing into Arcangel Gabriel with a lost memorie.

I so would enjoy a new Creature From the Black Lagoon movie. Even a new Phantom of the Opera would be good too. I really want to see Universal rebirth the monster movie series.

Good to see I'm not the only one who enjoys this film. Not a "great movie" but a damn good time if you just want to switch your brain off and enjoy some camp action.

I liked Van Helsing. It was a fun movie. It also has one of my favorite incarnations of werewolves. Van Helsing's werewolf form was badass.

Well whaddaya know--with the addition of that tail, the creature design kind of looks like Ymir from 20,000,000 Miles To Earth (1957).

I'm a huge of the genre I would love to see connected movies from Universal I know that they would give it respect. Wolfman was kind of a letdown but man oh man but I love to see connected universal monsters. What I really want to see something it wouldn't ever happen is a remake reboot of the Monster Squad only this time make it deadly serious.

I enjoyed the film but I reckon they should have made it darker and a bit more serious and less of a Pseudo-Batman

I enjoyed Van Helsing and loved it for what it was. Of course i was much younger back then.

Watching Van Helsing now makes me realize that it isn't that good.

This is another film, like the Transformers ones, that could have been so much better with a little goddamn restraint by the filmmaker. The concept was a fun one, and scaling it down some would have done wonders for eliminating a lot of the nonsense.
