NEW GODS Director Ava DuVernay Drops Intriguing Casting Hint; Confirms Darkseid And The Furies

Ava DuVernay dropped some new tidbits about the New Gods movie during a Twitter AMA, and while the director didn't reveal anything too major, she did touch on some very interesting topics. Check it out...

New Gods director Ava DuVernay took part in a Twitter AMA earlier tonight, and, not too surprisingly, some of her followers asked for updates on the DC Comics adaptation.

While she didn't get too specific, DuVernay confirmed that both Darkseid and The Furies will appear. This will hardly be a massive revelation to comic book fans, of course, but the filmmaker did also drop an intriguing casting hint.

When asked if she planned to cast anyone from her Netflix miseries When They See Us in the movie, Ava replied that there was a "99.9% chance this will happen."

When They See Us boasted a very strong ensemble cast of relative unknowns and established actors such as John Leguizamo (John Wick) and Michael K. Williams (Boardwalk Empire), so it'll be interesting to see who makes the jump to the DC Films Universe.

DuVernay is still working on the script with Tom King, so she probably hasn't really given any serious thought to casting yet, anyway.

Plot details for New Gods remain under wraps, but rumor has it the story will revolve around Mister Miracle's romance with Big Barda.

When They See Us was infuriating and soulful in all the right ways. I know a lot of people have soured on DuVernay, (and I don't know if she's the perfect fit for this material), but WB has done so much worse in the past.

Considering how well Aquaman and Shazam! have both turned out, I'm starting to look forward to this. Ava and the Furies help a lot. But please don't give Darkseid the X-Men: Apocalypse treatment.

The first 2 episodes of When They See Us were pretty damn good but I couldn’t finish it because it’s just WAAAY TOO INFURIATING and made my blood boil with each episode

@BlackBeltJones - You do you, but I thought the last two episodes were pretty great, so....

@BlackBeltJones -

I hear you. When They See Us is a great series but hard to watch. The "justice system" is [frick]ed up

@Spock0Clock - I believe you it’s just such a hard thing to watch. I guess it’s a combination of the real story and how well executed the show is in delivering it that I found myself constantly balling my fist while watching.

Being a black male, it kind of hits hard. I figure one day I will finish it for sure though.

@BlackBeltJones - I get that (to the extent I can as someone who isn't a black male). I was able to convince some relatives to watch it. They aren't the most sympathetic or worldly people, and once the interrogations began, I could feel them going from "those kids shouldn't have been out unsupervised at night" to actively seething that our criminal justice system would allow this to happen. It's impactful stuff.

Like I said, you do you. Knowing that they ultimately get some degree of vindication is what got me through the rough spots.

@Spock0Clock - the unsupervised part I get from your relatives. Coming from someone raised by inner city parents who were TOO AWARE of what could happen to me being out too late, unsupervised in the city.

One of these days, and I want to say soon, I’ll get through the rest of these as I keep hearing nothing but great things about it just purely as a show. I love good tv so that should win out.

@BlackBeltJones - the last two episodes will be really difficult brother. But it's worth knowing the whole story...

@BlackBeltJones - I couldn't watch either. Being a black male that's actually been through that exact situation brought back all kinds of anxiety and ptsd.

I was at my little sister prom send off and my father was watching it and I literally just froze up.

Michael K. Williams would be one hell of a Darksied. That would be my pick for the person to follow her.

Here’s the thing, I love DC but if Marvel keeps beating then to the punch people are going to think they are just ripping off Marvel and it’s going to taint the brand even more. DC best Marvel to Aquaman but I can’t help but think that now that’s Eternals is coming out before this that people aren’t going to care or at the worst are going to see it as too similar
