Hey all, time for another installment of my weekly reviews. This is another one those short listed weeks. It was to be 4 issues this week but sadly one was pulled this week, which was Power Girl #14, so this week its down to 3, yet these were some of the best reads this week. Todays three are Avengers Academy #2, Invincible Iron Man #28, and my latest addition to my reviews Superman #701. Lets dive in....
Avengers Academy #2: If you weren't convinced on picking up this series, well this will be the definite selling point. The issue focuses on one character yet still has everyone in it. The issue mainly deals with the heroine Finesse and how she fits in with the team. The others are still mad and questioning their motives in the academy. The team is attacked by an old enemy which was sent by one of the faculty. Pym shows a video to Finesse about the history of Quicksilver up to now, she gets a clever idea and has a small chat with him leading to her blackmailing him to train her personally. I really enjoyed this issue, rather than the team as a whole we got a good clearer focus on just ONE character. I do like this roster, but focusing on all can lead to too many back-stories going on at once. I was stunned by some of the revelations about Finesses origins and just how quickly she learns things. The art fits the characters and I found no errors in any of the pages. I love this issue and can't wait for more. I give the issue an A-
Invincible Iron man #28: First off, don't let the cover fool ya, nothing like that happens in this entire issue AT ALL, but that's not a bad thing, just poorly chosen picture. The issue continues from the last issue, Stark and Rhodes arrive in Japan after Detroit Steel has handled the situation. The main story involves more investors joining together to become part of Tony's new plan to change the world. Stark recognizes the younger Hammer girl and studies over video tapes to find her from his past. The issue ends with Pepper waking up and smiling. Fraction is an amazing writing and he is trying to tell us an intriguing techno thriller but come on, we need a break from all the chit chat and have some you know...ACTION scenes. It's only a minor complaint but not every issue should be all talk. I haven't found an error after seeing Reed, so they are catching on again. I enjoyed it but give us a good battle. I give this issue a B+
Superman #701: My first new DC title and its writing by the great JMS, who brought Thor back from the grave and gave us a great new introduction to that universe of characters and now he is bringing both Superman and Wonder Woman back to a more basic level. This issue involves Supes walking through Philadelphia and members of the press hounding him. We follow him on this journey through town doing tiny helpful things as he passes by the townspeople. He has a touching talk with a young woman whose trying to jump off a building. The issue ends with him leaving Philly and Pennsylvania. JMS is a genius writer, he writes this issue with so much heart and love for the character. Supes acts less like a hero but more like person. He gives great and insightful talks as he goes from place to place doing things that is a tiny good deed to doing something for the greater good. I love the art, it really emphasizes Superman on this journey with a wide range of colors. I love this and can't wait for the next issue. I give this issue an A++
So it was a fun week for comics. Next week will be a 6 issue review week, so be prepared. Take care friends. Aki87 OUT!!!
