All DC Movies on Hold!

All DC Movies on Hold!

David Goyer, writer/director of the upcoming The Unborn told IESB that the DC comic book adaptations at Warner Brothers, movies like The Flash, which Goyer was writing at one point, have been put on hold.

"A lot of the DC movies at Warner Brothers are all on hold while they figure out ... they're going to come up with some new plan, methodology, things like that so everything has just been pressed pause on at the moment. It was the doubleheader of both Iron Man and The Dark Knight coming out, so more than ever I think they've realized, I think DC was responsible for 15% of Warner Brothers' revenue this year, something crazy like that, so they realized that comic books, it's become a new genre, one of the most successful genres."

Also on hold is Goyer's adaptation of X-Men Origins: Magneto, and Goyer told Craveonline: "they [Fox] still want to make it and they're hoping Wolverine will be a big hit and that'll open the way for Magneto."

how long will we have to wait for DCU comic book movies that aren't Batman or Superman
ryanallen
ryanallen - 1/8/2009, 3:18 PM
I think the reason DC is so tentative about their movies is because they're afraid they'll turn out like the mess that Fantastic 4, Ghost Rider, Spiderman 3, the Hulk, and X-3 were

I disagree igloodude11. Marvel isn't running low. DC is in a freeze because of WB. Too many suits getting involved. Beside Marvel just started there own studio Marvel Films. IronMan & the reboot to the Hulk did farelly well & are seen as a success.

I can't say this news is unexpected, as DC seems to think time will wait for them. They need to get on their horse, or Marvel will destroy them.

Furthermore, and more importantly, can someone please take off the Vin Diesel add on the main page, since its a scientific fact that Vin Diesel sucks and should be hit by a bus.

I love how people think Marvel is better just because they are making movies.

At least DC won't let a Ghost Rider or Fantastic Four debacle happen with their characters..
As comic fans, we should be happy with DC's approach to their film adaptations. They seem like they are trying to get them right.

I love the Marvel movies, but it's a shame that we only get to see Tobey Maguire and Robert Downey Jr. in the same film, and they were gay monks..

It could happen, two studios teaming up but I doubt it will. Look at the Watchmen mess...

DC is just ridiculous. What the heck are they waiting for? Marvel is putting their ideas to motion and has totally taken up the market, while DC is just blowing their balls. They probably realize now Marvel has used up most of the ideas. What lack of creativity.

NoobMike - 1/8/2009, 7:20 PM
Well DC has their own studio... it's called WB (WB owns DC). They could probably make a special department for comic books, but it will still be WB.

Maybe, they put everything on hold to not repeat the same mistake they did on Watchmen, their lawyers are probably double checking that they do own the rights to all those characters.

No your right, DC just throws the "S" at us with Singer after having waited what... 20 years??? Now they're gonna wait another 20?

Maybe they're idea to shut down Shazam's movie wasn't blind luck, maybe they are reading these very threads wanting to find out what we want. Well now they know that Supermax will suck as well as Captain Marvel and that what we truly want is "World's Finest", then WW, then Green Lantern, then Flash and last but not least, JL freakin A!!! IN THAT ORDER!!!

MarkCassidy - 1/8/2009, 8:53 PM
thecolonel, you do know you have a DC character as your avatar??

its crappy , but if it means the adaps are going to be of a high quality then i dont mind waiting. Its true that Marvel dont seem to care so much about quality as getting the films out there.
JYCowboy
JYCowboy - 1/8/2009, 9:20 PM
Yes, the wait is intolerable but WB wants to handle the DC property correctly. This pause maybe a reorganization to form a Live Action DCU Film company to handle all the charcters. This also maybe a pause to make sure they own the rights of all these characters. Watchmen has got to be makeing them second guess. Lets all hope that this will result in each following DC films to be "Dark Knight" quality.
Inohaku
Inohaku - 1/8/2009, 9:30 PM
Yeah, let's hope they do keep the quality, and differentiate according to the specific characters, cause if they start making everything à la Dark knight, then they are going to screw it up big.
Talontd

Hey guys, THIS IS A GOOD THING!!!

What he's trying to say is that they realize that there is ALOT of money to be made! They're total revenue for the year was $3.5 Billion!

That means that their comic properties brought in approx $525 million!

Are you with me??? With comics bringing in that kind of money it seems like they've realized if they do these things right, they can make much MUCH more money!! What do suits care about???? MAKING MONEY! This means...

...better Producers
...better Directors
...better Writers
...and last but not least BIGGER BUDGETS!

This is good guys, i hope they don't wait too long either, but i'd rather wait for a quality, GREEN LANTERN, FLASH, WONDERWOMAN, etc, than get a bunch of underfunded films brought to us by a second rate crew!

All these films are going to be extremely expensive to make, they all require huge amounts of special effects. How much do you think it will cost to bring a quality green lantern film to us? At least $150 Million!

Maybe now we will get to see all these properties that we cherish so much.....DONE RIGHT! Just my .02

On a lighter note, did you guys see the preview for the rest of the seasons Smallville? Looks F@ckin awesome!!!

What DC did with Superman Returns was try something that worked years ago. Granted it wasn't the best movie that could have been made, but they believed in the project. Imagine if they did Burton's Superman with Nic Cage? Would have been kind of along the lines with what Marvel has done with their not so "up to par" adaptations.

Remember, in 1977, Star Wars changed the perception on the Sci-Fi genre. The Dark Knight is probably going to do the same for this one(Iron Man didn't hurt either...)

God i was so stoked when i heard about the possible Green Arrow script where the arrow gets sent to prison and has to escape, with the twist that the majority of the convicts were put there by none other than the Arrow himself. imagine that! a prison full of villians and supervillians!

buttttttttt

since DC sucks and MARVEL RULES, look like we wont be able to see that for another five years, if at all.

As long as DC gets some quality writers to adapt and ADHERE to quality stories than they shouldn't have any problems making great movies. I mean characters like Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman all have great stories. Just as long as they keep Brian Singer away from everything it should be fine.

There seems to be a lot of barking about FF4, electra and Ghostrider.....less you people forget the financial situation Marvel was in, they had not a whole lot of control over the artistic content. So they sold licenses like an ugly chick in a bar at last call trying to get a hook up.

Marvel only just released their fist picture under their own studio's, remember?

Do we need to remind everyone of all the bad Batman and Superman movies as well? Or shall I bring up how awesome Supergirl was? Steel? No wait, how about Catwoman?

It's hit or miss folks, but I think they (movie industry) may just realize what potential these movies have for sequels, and if executed correctly, will bring in lots of revenue, rather then pump out string of crap to make a fast buck. Sure, some things are going to slip through the cracks, but I am pretty excited about the amount of effort being put into the movies with fans being kept in mind as of late.

EDIT: as in the people making the films, not the studios ;)

Shaman
Shaman - 1/9/2009, 8:54 AM
The reason behind all this is:

They see what Marvel is doing which is creating a superhero universe on screen instead of having every seperate hero in their own universe. They see the dollar signs evrywhere meaning the potential it would have to erase EVERYTHING already established. Which also means no more Nolan Bat movies. No matter which one comes out next, it will be the beginning of the DCU on the big screen as we know it. They will think of a plan to "correctly" incorporate every single character with tie ins to bring us great movies like JLA, DOOMSDAY, and KINGDOM COME which they simply couldn't have made before hand and they actually thaught it simply couldn't be done. Now that Marvel has taken the risk in proving them wrong, they're trying to use their idea to make themselves rise above Marvel since WB is supposed to own everything DC related. So they're also checking into that, making sure they don't make the same mistake with Watchmen.

ALL the Marvel characters in the movies prior to iron man and hulk´s reboot, "live" in a different world from each other...

So OK, we got lots of pictures (good or bad ones) but with NO SHARED ENVIRONMENT. The ONLY connection among them is the MARVEL animated intro in all of them, including the first Punisher...

until Marvel Studios´ rebooth of Hulk, which connects with IM and leads to avengers etc etc.. .SO.. QUESTION: IF ANG LEE´S FIRST HULK WAS MADE BY ANOTHER STUDIO, THIS MEANS MARVEL CAN REDO AND INCORPORATE TO THE AVENGERS UNIVERSE SAY, FANTASTIC FOUR?.. anybody know how much time will FOX have FF´s rights?
WeaponX
WeaponX - 1/9/2009, 10:11 AM
Let's not throw Marvel's name under the bus for something other studios are responsible for.

Marvel and their film company Marvel Studios has made two movies. Two.

I'm not really surprised that Warner Bros. are putting on the brakes. They're retarded. I mean really, the writing has been on the wall since 2000 that comic movies make money when taken seriously. How slow can you be? They can sit around a table and toss out bad decisions all day while Marvel Studios plows ahead full steam monopolizing the comic book genre. I've been waiting long enough for WB to get off their hands, pluck their heads from their asses and put out a movie that's not Batman or Superman. But they've failed yet again to think for themselves without waiting on someone else to prod them into motion.

This could be seen as a good thing but at the same time it could also prove to be a colossal waste of time when they get active again and just pump out a bucket of fail. What are the chances that when they do come out of their tree house, every other project that wasn't Batman or Superman will get the axe. No more Green Lantern. Just like Teen Titans direct to DVD, the live-action Wonder Woman or JLA and recently Shazam (not that it was a good idea to begin with). I mean, that's pretty much Warner Bros. modus operandi. To build hype on a non-Batman/Superman property, start the project, waste that time and money, cut it off at the throat and bury it. Until we're left with nothing but Batman and Batman spin-offs. Don't get me wrong, Batman is cool, but c'mon.

Fingers are crossed that this pause will shake some good sense in their thick skulls and we'll get to see The Flash in his own movie soon...oh and Green Lantern too and stuff. If they walk out and start talking Batman this and Superman that, I'm going to laugh. Because they'll be back to square one.

What they should walk out and do is just create a film branch for DC to control. Like they had with Warner Independent Pictures. Except with a larger budget so DC could have something of a studio themselves to give the fans of the other characters in the DCU something. All that Warner Bros. does is pay the bills in terms of involvement. At least then we'll friggin' get something.

Inohaku - 1/9/2009, 12:24 PM
It would be a shame and a great disappointment if DC does not continue the Nolan/Batman franchise. It's possible to do JLA separate from the Nolan universe. Nolan and Bale have already said they don't want anything to do with JLA or even Robin for that matter. Hopefully $$$ matters won't ruin what has become an unprecedented success.
SirJediFrank
SirJediFrank - 1/9/2009, 1:09 PM
Remember WB got DC when there was no comic book movies-boom...Warnes Bros in fact were the pioneers:

In fact thanks to WB we got the Burton´s Batman in 1989, and with that movie began the new comic book movie era... which had a grand rebirth in 200 with a younger Singer and the first x men movie...

I AM NOT defending TODAY´s WB ok? i am just saying the studio itself made something very good 20 years ago and 19 years later did it again...OR SHOULD I SAY, BURTON AND NOLAN DID, AND NOT THE STUDIO..? mmmh..
Shaman
Shaman - 1/9/2009, 2:29 PM
Sir Jedi Frank- What i was saying is that all the Marvel characters that "Marvel" has the rights to ARE part of the same Universe which is something unheard of for the mere fact that most execs thought it wouldn't be profitable. Just with all the Hype it's making, it's proving DC/WB wrong and since (aside Watchmen) they own all DC characters' production rights, they want to "Surpass" Marvel by having the biggest franchise ever created at the box office:

THE WHOLE FREAKIN' DCU!!!
SirJediFrank
SirJediFrank - 1/9/2009, 4:53 PM
Shaman- yes i know you are talking DC and maybe as you said there is still time to build a solid and cool DCU ,

what i mean is HOW MANY Marvel super heroes were already out there for the general public before Iron Man? The Iron Man II trailer will start with a "forget all Fox-Paramount-Sony movies, this is the real Marvel Universe" ?

Marvel saw the Snowball growing exponentially and said: wait a minute.. and they seem to have waken up in time to do a great hulk rebooth and a great Iron M and surely a great cap, thor, etc...

But to have a CONSISTENT DC COMICS MOVIE-UNIVERSE, WB would have to PRODUCE MOVIES WITH DIFFERENT CHARACTERS BACK TO BACK in order to flood the market as someone said, at least one per year like Grif said.

Or at least A LOT of cameos in the next DC-WB films..
...and to be honest, something RADICAL has to happen in their executive meetings in order to do so.

SirJediFrank
SirJediFrank - 1/9/2009, 5:13 PM
Inohaku_ i am sorry i have to disagree STRONGLY w/you.

JLA should be done INSIDE OR OUTSIDE Nolan´s universe, BUT NOT BOTH different existing at the same time.

i mean he was hired to take his awesome perspective to the screen, and he did, big time. but HE WAS NOT HIRED TO SHAPE THE DCU to his own view (not that he wants to anyway)

He is an artist..if he insists to do a solo-batman-universe, it is his right.. but if this WB-DC pause leads to a great rebirth of the DCU on the big screen.. (if i read you Shaman right, that is, hehe ;-]):

...then Nolan must step aside.Proudly of course. (and perhaps the whole cast of the Dark K)

JYCowboy
JYCowboy - 1/10/2009, 4:14 AM
It also could be WB testing the waters with Fox. Fox put a stop to WB releasing a Comic Movie pretty short. Marvel is enjoying the lack of compition verse DC with this stall. WB has no other finished picture and with Watchman on hold, this allows the Marvel products to dominate in the market. Think what is coming. Wolverine would be over shadowed by the Watchmen. I think the success of Dark Knight shocked and frighntend the "House of M".

I agree with your theory, as I personally think the line-in-the-sand fanboyism is ridiculous.

However, DC/WB IS responsible for Batskates and the Batmerican Express card.

IMO, B&R is the WORST comic film ever made.

Yes that one looked like a bizarre-surealistic- student-movie. did you hear the sound they added when Mr Freeze´s henchmen slipped or were thrown by batman??: "SWHOOOOOOUUUCH!", just like the 60´s series..no, worst, those were just POW!, THOMB! with letters...but then again, IT WAS 1966!!, not 1997 or so.

burton´s batman 1, the breakthrough, was made AFTER A PAUSE- in 2000´s Fox´s Xmen after that silly B%R, and then AFTER ANOTHER PAUSE: BATMAN BEGINS... so let´s hope something even better than TDK comes out next. ;-].. with other heroes i mean.

I guess they both contributed to some dire movies. The worst on marvels side being Man Thing! and that still manages to be better than Batman and Robin..im really not joking!

ProdigalPlague - 1/10/2009, 12:38 PM
creative license of that sort has increased and bolstered the batman fanbase. while nolan's gotham is a bit myopic, he has left the door open making batman a fugitive. like i said on another older post, bats has the opportunity to operate in other cities in the dcu now that operations on home turf are even riskier business. so let's be thankful for nolan and what he has done thus far. he could have just the same done two moon knight films for marvel and catapulted that b list hero into stardom ( i would love to see that happen actually) but i digress. you all make valid points but i this point is a better jump off: dc needs it's own studio the way marvel has its own studio yet let other companies in on distributing the film, again just like marvel. lionsgate is cleaning up on marvel properties as well as others and indeed the writing on the wall is apparent to all but those who set the wheels in motion. eventually dc will have to follow in whatever percentage the formula marvel has so it can formiddably compete. then maybe we can see a marvel vs dcu or even image/wildstorm/topcow vs marvel&/dcu crossover film before the wrinkles on my balls have wrinkles. i will however be rooting for and expecting my original want primarily.
