Danny Boyle Has No Interest In Helming A Comic Book Movie; "They’re Not My World At All"

Just as he recently dismissed the notion of directing a future instalment in the James Bond franchise, Danny Boyle has now said that he has very little interest in tackling a comic book movie either. He does however share his thoughts on Josh Trank's take on The Fantastic Four.

Talking to Collider to promote the release of the brilliant Trance, Danny Boyle has revealed that he has no interest at all in helming a comic book movie at any point in the near future. "No, I’m not a big fan actually," he told the site. "I was never a devotee of them. I kind of missed out on that really. I’m always amazed when I meet the people who love them." However, just because he doesn't want to helm one of them, that doesn't mean that the director of 127 Hours hasn't enjoyed at least one! "The superhero movie I loved was Chronicle. I met Josh Trank the other night and we did a Q&A together. He’s working on Fantastic Four and has great and wonderful plans for it. But they’re not my world at all. It doesn’t appeal to me at all." I would have to agree with Boyle. I just don't see his style meshing with a CBM. No offense to him. I think he's a brilliant director, just not for a CBM.

Boyles a genuis, Chronicle is one of the finest super hero movies ever made without doubt and the final scenes are the closest we're gonna get to a decent Akira adaptation

Not to mention, with the litany of directors out there that ARE passionate about comics and their characters, I'd rather see CBMs go to someone like Joss Whedon who gets it, and more importantly, gets it RIGHT.

Well, he said the same about all big movies, including Bond franchise, so what did you expect?

i actually like that he is flat out saying he has no interest in making a cbm. A Boyle cbm would be interesting and probably pretty good, but a movie by a guy with no love for the comics just seems stale and boring.

Maybe he means he's amazed because he just thinks it's cool that people are passionate about something. I don't really think he comes off douchey at all. Most people actually AREN'T comic fans, believe it or not. Also, there is a BIT of newsworthiness to this considering it mentions Josh Trank and FF. You know what's dumb? People that click on articles, read them, and then take the time to post how much they don't care.

I dont get why people are always asking Danny Boyle whether he's interested in these types of fim's. Boyle couldn't be more removed from those types of films if he tried. He never shows any interest in the big blockbuster and is only interested in directing the "artsy", slightly bizarre, independent feeling dramas that he's been making for years.

I, personally, would like to see Boyle do something a little bit different from what he has been doing for the past decade or so....but I know it's going to happen. In my opinion, Boyles best film is the only "Hollywood-ised" film he's ever made.....The Beach (I'm sure a lot of people will argue that Trainspotting...but I feel that film is overrated).
In fact, in the documentary Side by Side....Boyle talks about how The Beach was as "Hollywood" as he ever wanted to go and didn't really enjoy the experience of shooting that way. Boyle is one of the only directors who actually likes to veer away from the cinematic feel.....preferring the "found footage" and documentary look over the 35mm cinematic feel. I.E. 127 hours, 28 Days Later.

I dont get why anyone would WANT their films to feel cheap like 28 Days Later did....but, to each his own.

He didn't insult comic books here. He said they aren't for him. He's being honest. Not everyone has to like what you do.

Boyles a fantastic filmmaker and hating him for not wanting to do a comic book film is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Solid director. He is more than capable of directing any CBM but i'd rather see him do his own stuff.

That actually sounds pretty good to me. First off, he's simply being honest there, and that surely is fine. Also, there are people like him, Rian Johnson, Duncan Jones, et cetera, whose brilliant works are fairly original to the standard of Hollywood nowadays, and I just want to see them continuing with just that. Not a loss to the CBM department, either, as there are lots of new talents to be dug out there, or that are available and also suitable for the job.

He's never heard of the expression "never judge a book by its cover". Writing off a whole genre of source material because its not cool.

Where does he write it off? He says he's not into making adaptions of them. Plain and simple. No where in here does he call them lowly pieces of work or beneath him.

Its like asking someone who doesn't care for history to make a historical film. Just because they don't want to, doesn't mean they don't respect history.

Shame really with the diverse nature of comic books today crossing all genres you would think he would go case by case than rule out entire sect.
