WARNING: Major spoilers ahead. Alright, here we are. The long-awaited issue three of Kingdom of Monsters is finally here. Issue two was a great issue, how does this one fare? Read on.
My main thing with this issue was, aside from a TV screen, Rodan. Didn't. Appear. At. All. We have a few shots of Godzilla, and Anguirus...but no Rodan.
Another thing with this issue is that the monsters take a back-seat for humans. IDW is trying to create a fictional version of today's world, hence a Lady Ga-Ga look alike. (No, I'm not kidding.)
The second issue was great, because the monsters were the MAIN focus, whereas in this issue, Godzilla only gets a few panels, Anguirus a few more, and Rodan zilch. What I don't like is that, on cover b, it showcases the three monsters fighting, but that doesn't happen at all, they don't even meet. I was expecting the first monster showdown in this issue.
It doesn't help that the humans are super unlikable. We have this guy who claims
he can stop the monsters......right. He has a run-in with Anguirus, and we all know how that ends.
Now, for the creepy twins on the cover. They were interesting, I thought they were a weird re-imagining of the Mothra twins. I was wrong....then we have this giant egg that washed up on the shore. The summery on the comic would have you believe that is Mothra inside....well, surprise surprise, the "Black Mothra" Battra hatches out. I was literally shocked, and yelled "Say what?!" The writers really know how to bring a good surprise. That scene kept the comic from getting a low score.
As for Battra, well, other than hatching, he does nothing. But he looks great. He's currently in his larva form, which I think will last a long time.
The art fits the series well. Battra looks especially amazing.
One more thing I hope changes, is that the monsters get some character. Right now, they just seem like walking events. I don't mind yet, (I will if they don't start fighting already. Next issue I'm betting they will, Mothra's on the way.)
In closing, sadly, this comic is a big letdown. We need some big monster fights already, not one-shot laughable humans.
I give this issue a 3/5. (Barely.)
