Earth's Mightiest Fansites: A Call to Arms! Or At Least to Post

Earth's Mightiest Fansites: A Call to Arms! Or At Least to Post

Comic Book Movie is one of the most popular online destinations, and for good reason: its users and the content they've generated -- whether in the form of articles or comments -- have turned this into one of the web's most unique sites. And the potential is there to do the same at Earth's Mightiest Fansites, our sister site.

Although some look at Earth's Mightiest as a duplicate of CBM in terms of content, the exact opposite is true. The design may be similar, but the stories featured span a wide spectrum of subjects. In fact, no pop culture subject is off limits.

I'm bringing this up, because I'd like to put the invitiation out to each and every one of you to check out Earth's Mightiest and help us to grow it so that the site can meet its full potential. You can offer comments on existing stories and/or create your own non-CBM pages covering whatever you'd like. There is SO much happening in the worlds of film, TV, books, comics and music -- and it's all ready to be covered at Earth's Mightiest Fansites.

To check it out, just click on the image below.

Thanks for considering the invitation,

Ed Gross

Chinese food is never a continental buffet's strength. You simply don't go there if you want to eat real good chinese food. Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but this has been attempted before without any success.

LOL @Rodimus9

Sorry @Ed. I've been a member over there for a long time, but I'm starting to think CBM would have to go down for Earth's Mightiest to get that kind of attention.
EdGross
EdGross - 2/11/2011, 9:44 AM
Nobody's expecting it to match CBM, just trying to turn it into something. There are other entertainment sites out there, and it seems to be that given the following CBM has, we should be able to get something good going there.

With all due respect, Rodimus9, 80% of CBM's headlines are aggregated from other sites. There have been and will continue to also be exclusive interviews over there on subjects that won't fit here.

HeyVanity, thanks. Appreciate the good wishes. I really do believe that there's something there.

Rodimus9, just like CBM, anyone posting pages with google adsense can make money doing so. And if you think I'm somehow getting rich doing this stuff, you're mistaken. It's about trying to grow something that may pay off in the future -- and the same is true for anyone who gets involved.

TwilightMutant, if you can, try again and if you don't get a response I'll check into it.

It can work. These are 2 websites that have completely different content. I dont even understand why people feel the need to be a dick about this. Not your cup of tea? keep it moving. How many times have we had people here whine about "this is not a comic book movie!"? Finally there is a site that allows you to post based on non CB movies and you want to whine about it. If you have nothing nice to say just keep quiet...its not brain surgery.

MsKyle, thanks. Appreciate it.

Swanky, not a lot of book and music coverage at this point, but the field is wide open. What I love about it is that the subjects can be SO wide-ranging.

Matches- Physically, EM's just as cool as CBM. That's the truth. I mean, it has the same blueprint. But there in lies the problem. It's "as" cool as CBM while CBM ain't going anywhere, rather just as strong as it's always been. So, to make people go there, especially by advertising it ON CBM, you need to make it "cool-er". I've tried going to more than one website that offered the same perks before and you know what happens? Not only me but many others that do try it eventually just gravitate back to the ONE place where they get the MOST of what they look for.

To make people CHOOSE to eat your continental buffet's chinese food over their own local favorites (to which they seem to enjoy every single day without feeling the need to try anything new), you need to make BETTER food to offer them. Not the same food (with a slightly different taste) with the option to fill their plates with greek, italian, french and indian foods as well.

A one-stop shop doesn't succeed unless they have something other popular stores can't give their already established clientele. Does Wal-Mart make their money from offering the same products that could be found elsewhere WITHOUT lowering their prices? Of course not. That wouldn't even be logical. You bet your sweet ass they make their prices so low that their competitiors can't even afford to compete anymore. That's how they became that big, that popular. But news is free and no matter how you sugar-coat it, it still tastes the same.

And i'm sure you've heard this expression before: "You can't sell ice to inuits". If you offer people what they are already getting everyday for free and all you've got to offer them as incentives is what they aren't really interested in, why would they go for it? I mean, you've seen what happens when a non-comic-related article pops up on CBM. People go apeshit saying it has no business being here in the first place, and add that they aren't coming to this place for unrelated stuff. And although EM's and Ed's articles are just as well written as the ones on CBM, it's still a proven fact that people will prefer to read the comic book film related ones on CBM than at EM. It's just how it is and it's certainly not because EM hasn't been advertised enough or inappropriately. For EM to thrive, they'd either have to completely quit the CBM news and focus on a different specific niche or completely merge with CBM under one roof(which would equivalate to CBM shutting down and let's face it, that's not going to happen). What actually made CBM this big and popular is the fact that they did specifically the OPPOSITE of EM. They saw people's thirst for comic book film news, to which people only got by the drop amongst plenty of film news they weren't interested in, and they decided to make a place where all the CBM fans can get their fix. BOOM! Success.

I really do wish for EM to do well. I have nothing "against" the site itself, it's a fine site. But it's just not something i see people "prefering" over what they're already getting, even if EM gets exclusives. I mean seriously, we've all seen what these websites do when news pops up exclusively elsewhere. They make their own news article about it with just a link to the source. And i know for a fact that PLENTY of readers don't follow that link. Some might, to get the full story, but they rarely ever jump ships. They come back to the site they continuously enjoy. It's just a small fact of life. Sorry to be a pain but if EM had what the people truly wanted and searched for, it would already be bigger than CBM. EM isn't new. It didn't start yesterday. And it certainly isn't lacking any exposure from popular sites such as CBM.

I'll help any way I can Ed. I do have to admit that I have contributed and frequented over there before but I always seem to gravitate back to CBM. Not through any lack of interest, it just seems like I get caught up with whats going on here and don't make it back over there for sometimes weeks at a time.

I've said before that my work is sporadic but any time I'm online I'll see if I can't browse and contribute. It is a great site and worth the effort to try and build it into something bigger.

Thanks all for the feedback. The points are very well taken, and Shaman I do appreciate you expressing your thoughts as in depth as you have. Taboo, I'm very happy to have you over there whenever you can.

Truthfully, I know EM is never going to take the place of CBM and I would be a fool to think that it could or would. If you get your meal at CBM, I'm just trying to offer a little dessert. For me, and long before I got involved with Earth's Mightiest, my interests have been all over the place, from CBMs to action, to scifi, horror, the Beatles, sitcoms, etc. And when I am surfing the web, I will go to different sites to get information on the many different things I'm interested in. I'm under the impression that there are a lot of other people like me who do enjoy news about subjects that really can't be covered here at CBM, so I'm trying to make EM an alternative.

@Shaman- Wow. I wasn't expecting a book. :) But seriously, I see what you're saying though. Just like otherside said, CBMs are my main passion, so I'm constantly on this site because it provides me with my daily fix of nerdery. But after I commented on this article, I went over to EM to check it out because I hadn't been there in a while, and I actually read some articles that interested me that were non-comic related. I think Ed's point that he was trying to make was that, yes, CBM is the premier site for CBM news, but when it comes to other things that interest comic book geeks like action/horror/sci-fi/fantasy movies, tv shows, literature, music, theater, etc., EM is that one-stop shop for all of that stuff that wouldn't fit in over here. But, again, I do see your point about anything that IS comic related that's linked from CBM to EM. As always, Shaman, you are articulate in your comments, and I really appreciate being able to discuss things with the likes of yourself and a few others intelligently without bullying or insults. You have always been one of my favorite people to talk to on this site for that very reason. You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. :)

@Grimm- From what I've seen of your posts and chatroom discussions, you seem like a pretty cool guy, but Shaman is class and an old-schooler, so please, do not lump him with the troll crowd. He made his point intelligently, so let's refrain from insulting someone who truly does not deserve it.

Hi, Ed. Very interested in EM and I already know I'm gonna get butchered for saying it, but I'm not sure I understand the process of getting a fansite up and running on EM. Can you direct me to any source that would give me the basics?
Shaman

Matches- Well right back atcha! And i'm always pleased to find out that we don't agree on certain subjets cause then i know i'll have a great conversation, just as you described them. :)

Ed- I know it ain't easy, man. You keep on fighting the good fight. And you know i wouldn't be offering food for thought if i didn't care ;)

Grimm- So you and who else? Just because YOU break the mold, doesn't mean plenty of other people do. Just run a few polls to see who actually did come from EM, found out about CBM, and then went back to EM while gradually forgetting CBM. As you can already see, plenty of EM supporters still forget about it and just kick it back at CBM on a regular basis. I'm just telling it like it is to HELP make the site KEEP their traffic. Just ignoring these facts is NOT helping the site AT ALL. And brave effort and all but i find it pretty ironic that you commented on here about EM bashing. Don't look now but the time you spent here was time away from EM. You deliberately took traffic away form EM to give to CBM which is exactly the point i was making. Bra-[frick]ing-vo.

In the end, CBM keeps it's traffic because of the very community that fuels it. Which means there is still hope for a community to build and stay at EM. It just needs something to make it happen and if nothing does, i just don't see that outcome falling from the sky, out of the blue. I don't know what spice it needs a dash of, specifically. But when i do, i'll definitely give you the recipe, Ed.
