Kevin Smith's Hit Somebody Will Be His Last Film

It's been speculated that Kevin Smith would be retiring from the director's chair. But now comes confirmation that this will indeed happen after he finishes Hit Somebody

For some time now, director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma) has hinted via his podcasts that his upcoming hockey film Hit Somebody would likely be his last film. While in Sundance promoting his latest film, Red State, Smith talked with Cinema Blend, where he confirmed that this was indeed the case.

...Smith has confirmed that he will retire as a director following the filming of his next project. According to our source on the inside, the wonderful Katey Rich, he will instead focus on helping other people make movies. Whether this means that he will be serving as a producer or continuing to write is unknown, but we will update this story as we know more.

Smith, who has had a rather controversial career, both in front of and behind the camera, is also one of the most talented that Hollywood has to offer. He has not only written films, but has also had a successful career writing for DC Comics with the Batman character among many others. I hope that Smith will continue to at least do some writing as he has created some fantasic films and characters and it would be a shame to see him not continue with at least that.

Absolutely mate.The guy's a hack.He mistakes characters endlessly talking utter shite as erudition.His plots are awful and childish at best.He has no ability to inspire great performances from his actors and his use of camera and lighting are practically non existant.I confess I did like his movies years ago,but then I grew up :)

Smith although a great writer, (one of my favorites) is not a talented director and will tell you so himself. As long as he continues to write I'm happy. He should not fade into oblivion.

Why couldn't he have retired before he made Clerks II?

He's not completely devoid of talent and I have enjoyed some of his movies but I think it's time to hang it up. He has made a complete ass of himself with his latest stunt and no man who's films are so utterly mediocre(and I'm being generous) can afford to be such a [frick]in martyr.

@Spartan76,

I respectfully disagree with you. Kevin is one of the only directors that (in my humble opinion) can bring out the best of Ben Affleck. (The other being Affleck himself.)

I have had the privilege to meet Kevin Smith in person, and I can say from experience that he is the exact opposite of a hack. It's too simple to just call him a word like that and move on. Are his movies perfect? No. But they're a lot better, and in many ways more honest than many movies I've seen. My friends and I have actually had conversations very much akin to that of Dante and Randall, or some of Kevin's other characters. Not unlike Rogen and Goldberg's characters in Superbad.

I've actually also read the Superman Reborn script and excluding the crap that Jon Peters wanted to add, it was surprisingly a very good read.

But then again, that's just me.

@KEVIN [frick]ING SMITH!!!
You cannot stop being a filmmaker. That's science. Do you know what Kubrick did when he finished his retirement movie? DIED! BEFORE IT WAS RELEASED!!!
A filmmaker is a filmmaker. It's a curse not a gift. So you're not exactly box-office gold, but you break even, more often than not and you are a known commodity. Do you know how many filmmakers out there can not get there movie distributed or even shown in festivals or even get their movies made?? Lots. Lots and lots. They all give up, too. But it is not a gift. It is a curse. They give up and then years later they have to try again to placate the burning drive within. You will do the same for you too are cursed, Kevin Smith, you are cursed. All you need is a smash to give you that passion again. Do something challenging you lazy, fat [frick]. Nows your time. CASH THE [frick] IN!

There are better directors out there, with better movies -- but Smith is the only director (and I admit this knowing full and well that it'll make me look like a dope) who has yet to make a film which has disappointed me. I have literally liked every single film this man has made -- and yes, that's to include Mallrats, Jersey Girl and Cop Out.

I can't say that about any single other filmmaker out there. Not even my favorite directors; Romero, Kubrick, Carpenter, Sayles. Each of them have made at least one film I didn't like. I can't say the same for Smith.

That's got to be worth something.

I love Smith! The guy's stuff is clever & funny as hell. But a retierment at his age is kind of like a death in a comic book- and he writes comics for f---s sake! Anyone really think we've seen the end of Johny Storm? Same deal, folks. Same deal.

WHOOO HOOO [frick] kevin smith! BUM SELL OUT! bitchin about critics not liking his generic and terrible cop out, he's been reduced to the lowest level of dick and fart jokes. Before it was dick and fart jokes with some genuine heart to a story. Chasing Amy is a good story, well written and directed. Clerks is a classic and a decent movie starter still. Mall rats was consistantly funny. Everything else... shit. I know he's a comicbook guy but I guess you fans are willing to ignore shit movies because of that?

@Duke- please, for the sake of pretending anyone here knows jack about movies outside of the superhero type. please don't compare (in ANY way) Kubrick and Smith.

@ blankofthedead -- I've been a film critic; screenwriter; script doctor; have had reviews quoted on DVDs. I know jack about movies. And I would compare Smith to Kubrick as easily as I'd compare Spielberg to Abel Ferrara.

In order to be a successful filmmaker you have to have something no one else has, and that's your own personal take on things and the ability to express it and execute it on film. Given that, Smith is every bit the filmmaker that Kubrick was. His films are distinct; you know a Smith film when you see one. That's the mark of an exceptional filmmaker. That his subject matter may not appeal to the majority of filmgoers is carping. The same could be said for any of the directors I mentioned.

Kubrick and Spielberg have made bombs, too, y'know.
