 A Point of Geeks report

This fall 20th Century Fox will be releasing their animated feature, The Book of Life. The film is being co-written and directed by Jorge Gutierrez (El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera) and is being produced and shepherded to the big-screen by Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim). This latin-themed fairy tale is set on the Day of the Dead. It continues the trend of groundbreaking visuals in unexpected environments, following in the footsteps of films such as Rango.

It really seems that the cast is invested in the fun. Co-writer and director Gutierrez explained his goal as far as the film's visuals (via THR):
"The mandate of this movie was: Our 'Art of' book is going to look exactly like the movie. And every artist poured their heart and soul into that idea."

Clearly this film is going to be a visual treat. Hopefully the story and iconography will lead to this becoming a classic animated tale.

The film stars Diego Luna (Y Tu Mama Tambien), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar), Channing Tatum (22 Jump Street), Christina Applegate, Ice Cube, Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Placido Domingo, Cheech Marin, Gabriel Iglesias and more. Take a look:

Official Synopsis:
THE BOOK OF LIFE is the journey of Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears. Rich with a fresh take on pop music favorites, THE BOOK OF LIFE encourages us to celebrate the past while looking forward to the future.

The Book of Life will be in theaters October 17th, 2014.

Will there ever be a Vanilla Ice Cube? I would melt that on my hairy belly a hot summer day and make a pool in my bellybutton. Anyone want a straw and we share?

Eh, I'm not really into that type of computer generated art style.

I love how "Today was a good day" references an Ice Cube song. Clever.
