POLICE ACADEMY Gets A Director

Yes, that zany 1980's franchise that consisted of six sequels, a television series, a cartoon, and even a comic book has gotten its director.

New Line Cinema plans to bring back those loveable screw-ups from The Police Academy. The series started in 1984 with Hugh Wilson directing and Steve Guttenberg as Cadet Carey Mahoney. Since the original movie there have been six sequels, a pair of television shows (one of which was a cartoon), and even a run as a Marvel comic.

The studio has picked Scott Zabielski to direct the relaunch and reimagined series. While Zabielski has never helmed a feature film, he has directed segments of Comedy Central's Tosh.0 where he also served as co-executive producer. Zabielski has also gone through police academy training himself and is on reserve for the West Hollywood force.

No word as of yet if any of the original cast will return in any capacity. The production is still in very early stages, but it seems to be moving along fairly well. It will be interesting to see who they get to join the academy and if any of the original will return. I'd like to see Mahoney teaching some rookies myself, but we will have to wait and see. Thoughts, remarks, concerns? Sound off below.
