POLL: How Important Are The Opinions Of Film Critics To You?

With Rotten Tomatoes disabling comments on The Dark Knight Rises reviews because of "fans" who have been abusing and threatening any critic who dares to dislike a film they have yet to see themselves, we want to know exactly how important other people's opinions are you.

"Death threats, rape threats are not OK, and that's what was happening," said Rotten Tomatoes editor in chief Matt Atchity in a recent interview about the decision to disable comments on the pages with reviews for The Dark Knight Rises. So-called "fans" were making threats such as the ones above simply because a few critics dared to call a film they haven't even seen themselves yet, "nonsensical" and a "letdown". So, just how important to you are the opinions of film critics? Do you hang on every single word they say? Will a positive or negative review ultimately make the difference between whether or not you watch a film? Vote below and sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

People treat movies like they were made by the gods themselves. Childish really. A films greatness is all opinion anyways.

Rotten Tomatoes is a deceiving site. Never, EVER look at the tomato meter people. Why? Because the Average rating is what counts. Yes, currently the Dark Knight Rises is sitting at 86% on the meter, but that doesn't mean jack shit. The average rating for TDKR is 8.2/10!!! thats the highest average rating for any summer block buster this year! A movie on rotten tomatoes could be at 100% and have an average rating of 6.5/10 from the critics. I've seen it happen with numerous movies. RT is a site to stir up shit.

PLAIN. AND SIMPLE.

but they're good at it, I'll give em that.

A critic is a person. He/She counts as one person, no more, no less, and his opinion matters as much to me as the opinion of any other person I know and consider to be intelligent enough for me to want to know their opinion.

Death threats and rape threats ? These people must be really really insecure about how good the movie will be. Who cares what anyone thinks but yourself ?

"i like to check a few reveiws, but its not that important"

even if the avengers & the amazing spider-man were destroyed by the critic's i would of still gone to see them,f*ck me i went to see the green lantern & that was slated quite badly by the critics.(the reveiws were pretty much spot on)

I realize the critics review is their opinion on a film so while I may look at a few I don't let that deter me from seeing a film that I have an interest in. If I listened to critics I wouldn't have seen Thor, TASM or the first Spider-Man film from Sam Raimi.

I like reading reviews so i can get an idea of the quality of the movie. I generally forget about wat the reviewer talks about when I see the movie anyway.

I never listen to them, so many great movies that have come out that critics hate. If you say your a film fan you can find great things about movies most people hate

Somewhat important. I often disagree with the consensus of critics, but it's nice to see a high score for a movie I like. Aside from the Academy Awards which really is more geared towards dramas, it's the closest thing we have to an assessment of a movies quality. Being able to say "this movie I like made over $1 billion AND has 92% on RT" feels good in the sense that it really gives you a lot of power with which you can dismiss naysayers. Watching a movie will always be a personal experience and it's impossible for everyone to feel the same way about a movie, but doing well in these measurable categories gives a rough indication on the overall impact the movie has on the masses.

If a critic doesn't say what I want to hear (regardless of whether I've seen the movie), I'll threaten them with death!

It sucks people go bonkers over negative reviews but then again die hard fans will strap a bomb to their chest. The radio stations in Pittsburgh were talking about how people were slamming the negative reviews

i'm actually pay a lot of attention to reviews. while i don't reason it like the first option. i'm not that deprived of opinion. just that i will fallow the news and if i'm excited for a movie i'll probably look into the first opinions.

if this is about the dark knight rises it really doesn't matter. It is 104 to 17. That is a HUGE difference.

I'm ashamed of the fandom world right now. Death threats, really? Similar shit but not to this degree happened with Avengers too.

I never let critics influence me unless I'm really borderline on a film, then a clear majority may influence me one way or the other.

But as a fanboy myself I go see practically anything from the Marvel or DC universes on screen.

Oh and the fact that the Transformers franchise made billions pretty much says that fans don't pay that much attention to critics. What we like is mostly fringe stuff so I wouldn't expect most critics to grasp or be attracted to the subject matter

I think the article is around now because of the backlash from that RT review. Frankly I do think some of the reviews are pretty ridiculous. One of them is a B- and is counted as Rotten and another says that it's Rotten because it isn't as good as TDK. What kind of sense is that? It's the same crap that killed Amazing Spider-Man's reviews that said that the movie wasn't bad but because it's a reboot it's Rotten.
santoanderson
santoanderson - 7/18/2012, 5:08 PM
I think reviews have a lot to do with expectations, and it can be argued that the majority of critics had lower expectations for the Avengers than they did TDKR.

I read more than a few Avengers professional reviews that basically said "It shouldn't work. I didn't think it was going to work. I thought it was going to be a failure, but it isn't. *****." But with TDKR I've already read a few reviews where the critic says "After TDK, I expected perfection, and while this movie is great, it isn't perfect. **1/2."
